26. They need to spin this
Tue Feb 4, 2020, 12:31 PM
Feb 2020

The screw up is actually helping Biden since by the time the numbers are released the news cycle would have moved on.

Instead of Sanders giving a Victory speech, all the candidates gave a speech.
Amy Klobuchar gave the first speech. Klobuchar came in fifth. Why does her speech deserve attention? But she gave it and the news played it as if it meant something.

So Sanders didn't' get the media bump that's the reason candidates want to win Iowa in the first place. Meanwhile that Biden came in fourth gets lost in the noise.

And of course, now Biden can spin this as "You can't' trust those numbers" even though we have a paper trail so we actually can trust those numbers.

So Biden gets to pretend he is still viable just a little bit longer where he hopes S. Carolina will save him.

And to your point.. yeah...

If the argument is people didn't' turn out for Bernie they turned out for Biden even less.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Undecided

and those that can’t spend several hours in the caucus hall

One vote one person, and should not be badgered by others telling them how to vote

While some may want to blame it on software, the problem is the caucus process itself

Do we really want a system that is structured to exclude certain demographics?

If he turned out huge numbers of the same people who voted for him 4 years ago, then that would be an excellent result. Why would he be relying purely on first time caucus attendees?

The numbers will come out, but Biden is hoping that by then nobody pays attention anymore. I don't know if that line will work with all the big donors that poured millions into Iowa for him just to get fourth place. But who knows.

He really looks tired. The difference between him and Klobuchar was striking.

I’m sure he drives himself too hard, so I hope someone is making sure he gets rest.

I’m a helluva lot younger than him, and no way could I keep up that pace.

His emails to supporters both before and after tempered expectations. No big deal. Just keep working.

Iowa especially is made up of activists and knuckleheads (affectionately speaking) who vote out of passion. They are the ones motivated to turn out on a monday night and spend hours playing musical chairs.

Given the number of candidates and the makeup of activists, the spoils will be insignificant.

In '16 there were only 2 candidates. They roughly split the delegates with clinton getting 2 more than sanders (23-21).

This round, the winner might get 10-12. So will the runner up with the remainder going to whoever else makes the cut.

Nobody will be out of it after the results come in. SC and super tuesday have so many more delegates it isn't even a fair comparison.
