Starting to pay attention to Bloomberg more closely

He seems to be the only candidate who is attacking the threat head on.

That's the way we win this muthafucker up and down ballot.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Tue Feb 4, 2020, 06:19 PM

Is it someone devoted to the principles of the party and will work with fellow Democrats to advance the party platform?

Or is it someone who has an axe to gind so puts a (D) after their name and promises to toss some money to other candidates? Will that person, who has changed the letter several times, advance the party platform or will they have their own agenda?

What about those who took the money from the benefactor, will they be put in a position where they have to choose between supporting the party agenda or that of the source of the money that helped them get into office? A person who has a history of giving money to those who support his agenda, regardless of party?

There are candidates I prefer to Bloomberg. A lot. And I have suffered directly at his hands. He shit all over my union when he was mayor. But I only care about one thing in this election, which is beating Filthy Donnie.

I'm seriously considering supporting Bloomberg. The more I see, the more I think he is the only one who understands that messaging is everything in this election. 23. It's going to take some type of gamble to defeat an incumbent
Tue Feb 4, 2020, 05:47 PM
Feb 2020

We didn't have an ideal candidate in 2020 so I've long struggled to identify that gamble.

Now I think it is Mike Bloomberg.

This is the best way I cant put it: Think of that jerk white male loudmouth conservative in the neighborhood. Truck, American flags on both sides...whatever. He's going to vote for Trump. He'd love to vote for Trump the rest of his life.

But what Democrat is that jerk going to be least critical of? Believe it or not, that's the type of criteria we need to use. Not issues. Not long term party loyalty. If that loudmouth jerk pauses even a little bit when evaluating Bloomberg, if he nods his head even slightly in a measure of grudging respect, that type of thing is going to translate to votes where we need them.

92. Incumbent this year, and everyone keeps forgetting a very key thing about 2016.
Tue Feb 4, 2020, 07:18 PM
Feb 2020

2016 was not ours to win, it was the Republicans to lose, and despite it being a year when winning "should" have been easy for them, they STILL lost the popular vote by more than 3 million, and less than a % in all the key swing states that got them there.

People forget this country is fickle as fuck. The Democratic Party has NEVER held a 3rd term since FDR after the amendment was passed. Not a single time. The Republicans have only broken that mold 1 time when George HW Bush won after 8 years of Reagan.

In this country, incumbent presidents tend to win unless there's significant economic or socio political upheaval (think Carter), a significant 3rd party challenge that eats into their margin (thing George HW Bush in 1992 with Ross Perot), A nasty primary challenge (again Carter with Ted in 1980)…

This is an incumbent year - not good for us
The Obama repaired economy remains strong - not good for us.
We are kicking off a large field of contentious primary candidates - not good for us.
Trump is facing no significant primary challenger at all - not good for us.
As of today, Trump is facing no 3rd party GE challenge - not good for us (as an aside this would be the GREATEST fucking thing in the world.. we need another Ross Perot!)

This is by no means a call out that our situation is hopeless though, but it is not going to be nearly as easy as many thinks and that means we have to fight all the harder.. get our asses out on the pavement and canvass this shit. Get on those phones and bank it. find the extra $$ we can pull out of our wallets and donate it.

The important number is what individual campaigns have in cash on hand. The Dem nominee can transfer his or her contributions to the general campaign but doesn't get the money the other candidates have.

When his son Hunter is mentioned, Joe becomes really angry and snappy. That is playing right into the Trump people's hands and Joe seems oblivious of that.

There are legitimate reasons why Hunter went onto the Burisma board. He had been working for a consulting firm that was helping Burisma solves issues of corporate governance, Hunter was a point person in that effort, so it made sense for him to go onto the board to have a direct say in improving the corporate governance of the company.

But with Joe snapping at reporters as soon as Hunter's name is mentioned, the true reason why it made sense for Hunter to sit on that board gets lost and Joe's behavior with the reporter that asked the question becomes the story.

Either he's very lucky or very smart. Since he's a billionaire, I'll say he's very smart. The one thing I like is that he will put money in states like Texas without regard to finances. No other Dem nominee could afford to go after such states. He could literally be the first candidate to run a 50 state GE campaign.

George Bush is the reason I joined DU. Now to come here and see people cheerleading for one of his supporters ... it sickens me. Literally.

I don't give an elephant's ass if he's seen the error of his ways. Putting trust in someone who so recently was a Bush bootlicker is beyond stupid, it exposes a fear that's unnecessary and frankly embarrassing. And before I'm lectured about how people change, no. This is George Bush, not somebody who inhaled when they were 18 or gave away SS 30 years ago. It's George Fucking Bush, Dick Fucking Cheney and Karl Fucking Rove.

And as Democrats seek to win control of the U.S. Senate, it's notable how many Republican senators Bloomberg has backed in recent years:

Maine Sen. Susan Collins
Former Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk
Former Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, among others.

ain't too good at picking candidates with general appeal. Only 1 outta their last 4 presidential nominees managed to win the general election...and they were running against 2 of the worst Gopper goons in history. We nominate Sanders and you can probably make that 1 outta 5.

The moderate liberals (Biden, Buttigieg & Klobuchar) got around 55% of the Iowa vote while the progressive liberals (Sanders & Warren) only got about 45%...albeit the numbers are still trickling in. If they can't get even half of the Democratic Party how the hell will they get half of the entire electorate? These numbers accurately reflect the fact that progressives don't even make up half of all Dems. And the last time I checked there weren't very many self-identified liberals/progressives who are registered as Independents (less than 25%, in fact). Math certainly doesn't seem to be my fellow progressives strong suit.

If we Democrats are actually stupid enough to shoot ourselves in the foot yet again I may have to eat a bullet because I'm not sure I can take another 4 years of Fuhrer Drumpf. Folks can bitch all they want about some of Bloomberg's choices and policies in the past but we'd all be a lot better off with him in the White House than Sanders out of it if that is the choice that it ultimately comes down to.

Who Will Win The 2020 Democratic Primary?

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2020-primary-forecast/

I'm just gonna sit back for a few months and see what happens. If 538 is anywhere close to being right (and they usually are) we may be looking at a brokered convention.
