Even if the nominee is not clear at the beginning of the convention, he or she will already be one of the current candidates. There will be no ringers brought in who weren't primary candidates.

I also remember 2016 when Democats were giddy with glee over the fact that Republicans were nominating a complete clown who could never possibly win. Never say never.
