Bernie's Adventures on a Stalinist Kibbutz

<snip>

'Now that Bernie Sanders has become a serious candidate for president, it is inevitable that the media will pay attention to every aspect of his life. In 1963, when Sanders traveled to Israel to work on a kibbutz there were scores of American Jewish students who also volunteered. So it is rather strange that Sanders has consistently refused to tell the press about his time there and the kibbutz he worked on. When asked, he and his campaign dodged the issue.

Why would Sanders not answer such a simple question?

Now we have the answer from the Times of Israel. In 1990, Sanders, who was preparing to assume his newly elected position as a member of Congress, was interviewed by Israeli journalist Yossi Melman. Sanders told him that he visited Israel “as a guest of the leftist Zionist Hashomer Hatzair movement and stayed at its affiliated kibbutz, northeast of Haifa.”

Calling Kibbutz Shaar Haamakim simply “leftist” does not sufficiently describe the ideology of Hashomer Hatzair members. At the time, most American students who were Zionists belonged to Habonim, a mainstream group affiliated with Israel’s governing party, Labor.

Hashomer Hatzair, to the contrary, was the affiliate of Mapam, the coalition political group in Israel that united a few different left-wing groups into one political organization. By 1969, Hashomer Hatzair had entered into a unity pact with Labor. Despite this, its own members remained left-wing socialists. Today, its descendants support Israel’s far left political party, Meretz.'

but I am more liberal than a large percentage of the voting population. Not everyone who votes pays as much attention to politics as we do and certain words could turn them off. Meanwhile, republicans will be using their scare tactics about socialism and communism. Trump has already started, it will get worse.

Buttigieg, Biden, Warren, Klobuchar, Bloomberg, and Yang can all flat out say they are not socialists, but Bernie has already declared he is one over and over again. He can't untag himself.

That's from one poll last year, but it is fairly consistent. While in some cases, it might get better when you get down to what the actual candidate supports and people find they actually support it too, but that won't be the case with Sanders since his policies really are as extreme as the label implies

A quick search brought this up, concluding that Dems have a more positive view of socialism than capitalism, 57% vs 47%: https://news.gallup.com/poll/240725/democrats-positive-socialism-capitalism.aspx
And it shows there are some rethugs who feel positively about socialism, as well: 16%. Those would be the ones who might cross over and vote for Sanders, and that’s no small number...

There are a lot of people in this country who associated the word socialism with Russian communism, to the extent that its connotation is far worse than its denotation. There's been a lot of conditioning in this country, even among moderate Democrats, that socialists want to destroy the capitalist system, and when most people believe capitalism is fundamentally good and right, that's a lot of baggage to have to deal with.

No matter whom we nominate, the GOP will call that person a socialist, along with any other "alternative facts" those folks are able to fabricate.

My question for Senator Sanders is simple:

If we nominate Senator Sanders, will he support the democratic ticket up and down the line? Or will he refuse to support some as he has done to democratic hopefuls in the past?

Since Senator Sanders has not yet demonstrated the kind of grassroots support he told us he needs to get his agenda passed into law, we do need an answer to that question.

It is difficult not to like the irascible Senator; nevertheless, we do need a nominee who encourages us to vote democratic so we can fix this GOP enabled Trump mess.

I call myself a socialist, but I am a pragmatist and I live in the real world... yes the Republicans will use the word but it will have legitimacy if Bernie is our nominee... read any study or research on people's opinions, fears, concerns... younger people are not afraid, and critically thoughtful people are not afraid, but... trump has been very successful at distorting, misleading, gaslighting, brainwashing... I will stake everything I have right now on the reality that Bernie will lose if he is the nominee...

Bernie is my Senator and he keeps getting elected because Vermont is a world unto itself... it is not representative of the United States in any way

Joe is not mean spirited. When he criticizes someone, he tries to do it without being personally insulting. Of course, that won't be true with Trump, however.

I left for a few years and coming back it was just easier to create a new account. But I agree. I don't think he was trying to be mean, either. Come to think of it, I don't think I have ever heard him try to be mean. He's too much of a pro.

A good movie or book, but I still feel the need to keep up with what is happening. I'm afraid I might miss something important!

I finally cut back on my political books and started reading more escapism fiction, something I rarely ever did before. That helps. Did have to break down and start reading "A Very Stable Genius", but I'll follow it with something frivolous and mindless.

Wed Feb 5, 2020, 07:44 PM

used successfully to create suspicion of Obama and the ACA, because it's the racist code word that's replaced "communist."

Many people are going to associate "socialism" with Cuba, the USSR, and Venezula.

This is why you use the word "public" instead of "communal" or "governement."

There would be no way to disassociate "socialism" from Sanders - in whatever associations that it has with people in the US.

Feb 2020
The Hudson Institute is a politically conservative,[8] 501(c)(3) non-profit American think tank based in Washington, D.C. It was founded in 1961[1] in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, by futurist, military strategist, and systems theorist Herman Kahn and his colleagues at the RAND Corporation.

According to its website, the Institute promotes "American leadership and global engagement for a secure, free, and prosperous future."[9] It promotes public policy change in accordance with its stated belief that "America's unique and central role in the global system offers the best foundation for security, the defense of liberty, and assuring economic growth."[10]

...

Vice President Michael Pence used the think tank as his venue for a major policy speech on China[73][74] on 4 October 2018, noting that "Beijing is employing a whole-of-government approach, using political, economic, and military tools, as well as propaganda, to advance its influence and benefit its interests in the United States".

Hudson offers two annual awards, the Herman Kahn Award[8] and the Global Leadership Awards.[75][76] Past Hudson Institute honorees include United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley,[77] House Speaker Paul Ryan,[78] Vice President Mike Pence,[79] Ronald Reagan, Henry Kissinger, Rupert Murdoch,[80] Dick Cheney,[8] Joseph Lieberman,[81] Benjamin Netanyahu,[82] David Petraeus, and Shinzo Abe.[83]

Don't peddle right-wing talking points, smears, or sources

Do not post right-wing talking points or smears. Do not post content sourced from right-wing publications, authors, or pundits. Exceptions are permitted if you provide a clear reason for doing so that is consistent with the values of this website.

Why we have this rule: News media and the Internet are already awash with conservative propagandists attacking our candidates and our values -- we're not interested in providing them with another outlet. We understand that many of our members might hold some conservative viewpoints on isolated issues, but nobody here should be parroting hateful garbage from the RNC, the NRA, or the Family Research Council. Forum members should expect that the only time they'll have to read a right-wing smear or an article from Breitbart is when someone is pointing and laughing at it.

when he runs on the Democratic ticket in the Vermont Senate primary.

Matter of record.

Call his office. His staff will tell you that his political affiliation is Independent, but runs on the Democratic ticket for the primary.

Running on the Democratic ticket is very, very different than being a Democratic politician.

Sanders: I don't consider myself a Democrat

He said himself that he runs as a Democrat for the earned $$$ and media exposure that a major political party provides.

Tad Devine and his staff had to give him an ultimatum because he didn't want to run as a Democrat.

The biggest argument was over running as a Democrat. Over and over, Bernie Sanders said he didn’t want to. He’d spent his whole life purposefully outside the Democratic Party. He treasured his status as the longest-serving independent in Congress. Running as a Democrat wasn’t who he was. He didn’t want to do it that way.

His longtime consultant Tad Devine and the rest of the group came down hard: this is never going to have a chance of working unless you get over it. Suck it up, they told him.

That's a matter of record.
