Five African American lawmakers from Florida announced their endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination for president on Thursday.
The list includes two legislators from Orange County, state Reps. Bruce Antone, D-Orlando, the chair of the Florida Legislative Black Caucus, and Geraldine Thompson, D-Windermere; two from Hillsborough County, state Reps. Dianne Hart and Fentrice Driskell, both D-Tampa; and a lawmaker from St. Lucie County, Delores Hogan Johnson, D-Fort Pierce.
As vote-by-mail gears up across Florida, we feel energized by the growing support we have across the state, said Jackie Lee, Florida senior adviser for the Biden campaign. These legislators are well-known, influential leaders that know Joe Biden is the candidate best-positioned to beat Donald Trump in the critical state of Florida.
In a statement, Antone said Bidens character and distinct capability to connect with people of all backgrounds are the qualities we need in our next President, who will inherit a divided and polarized country. In Florida, the stakes are high. In the state legislature, we are on the front lines fighting for better schools, the dignity of work, and most urgently, the right for all Floridians to vote. I trust Joe Biden to tackle these issues head-on and get things done.
Thompson told the Orlando Sentinel that shes gotten to know Biden over the years, and I think he can go toe-to-toe with our current president.
Driskell said in a statement she believed Biden was the candidate who I am confident will be able to beat Donald Trump and also work closely with Congress to implement progressive change on the most pressing issues of our time.
Joe Bidens achievable plans and proven track record of getting things done prove to me that he is exactly the leader we need to break the stalemate in Washington and deliver for the American people.
The newly announced slate joins African American U.S. Reps. Al Lawson, D-Tallahassee, Frederica Wilson, D-Miami, and Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar in backing Biden in the March 17 Florida presidential primary.
