With him the tide shifts based upon what he thinks is best for him and his campaign.

To me that is inconsistent and too much like what we are seeing from Trump. But I guess that makes sense in a way, both Trump and Bernie run populist campaigns that focus on what is wrong and not the abundance of what is right, so they collect a core of diehards that, IMO, believe that they are being played for suckers by the "system" or "establishment". The Press is afraid to attack Trump because he turns on it and accuse it of being out to get him, Bernie has done some of the very same wording. If push comes to shove I certainly would infinitely rather have Bernie as President, but the similarities in how the two campaign and treat the Press, and people that don't agree with them is demoralizing to watch.

Delegates are determined by the average of the last 3 presidential general elections for the Democratic candidate for each state. (At least it was in 2016 and think it still is.)

Now the states determine how the delegates are allocated for each of their congressional district. Here in Indiana it is the average of the Democratic vote for Governor in 2016 and Secretary of State in 2018 divided by 400.

Even though congressional districts are created to be as near as possible the same population in each district, not every district has the same number of number of national convention delegates. The voter turnout for Democrats is the factor.

States with similar population do not all have nearly the same number of national delegates. In 2016, Missouri had a 2010 population of 6,021,988 and had 71 national delegates while
Wisconsin's 2010 population is 5,726,386 with 86 delegates. All because of voter turnout for the Democratic candidates in last 3 presidential.

The allocation for district delegates to state conventions is of the same nature.

What Would a ‘Recanvass’ in Iowa Look Like?

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/06/us/politics/iowa-recanvass-meaning.html

Tom Perez, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, demanded on Thursday that Iowa Democrats double-check votes from Monday’s caucuses after a meltdown in reporting results.

Mr. Perez mentioned a “recanvass.” There is also the possibility of a “recount.”

What’s the difference? In short: A recanvass involves checking the math on 1,756 precinct work sheets. A recount would require the hand-counting of about 180,000 preference cards from caucusgoers across the state and around the world.

48. There are 3 different types of delegates. County, state and national. In terms of the nomination...
Thu Feb 6, 2020, 11:48 PM
Feb 2020

...the national/pledged delegates, of which there are 41 from Iowa, are what matter. Nobody will get a fraction of a delegate. Sanders and Buttigieg will each end up with 12-14, Warren maybe 7-9, Biden 3-5 and Klobuchar 1.

The Iowa Caucus process is always ridiculous, but it's especially so this year (and not just because of the fiasco). Contrary to what many posters have said, there are, in fact, 2 winners. Like it or not, the agreement this time around was for there to be 3 results. The pre-alignment vote total (won by Sanders), the final vote total (won by Sanders) and the state delegate equivalents (won by Buttigieg). This is all assuming they don't do a total recount and come up with different results.

It's not hard to understand why there's so much confusion regarding the results and what they mean, and that would be true even if the process had gone smoothly.

Anyway, caucuses should be banned. Many people are not able or willing to take part in a long and public spectacle.

46. There are 3 results reported this year, so there are actually 2 winners.

There's the pre-alignment vote total (Sanders), the final vote total (Sanders by a narrower margin) and the state delegate equivalents (Buttigieg).

It's screwy, I know, but that was what was agreed to for this year's Iowa Caucus.

In terms of the nomination, what matters are the 41 pledged (national) delegates. Not the county convention delegates or the state delegates.

and find it pretty early to not simply be happy that two very good choices are doing well. I'd have liked Warren to do better, but I'm happy for Mayor Pete.

BS with 30 years, still doesn't understand.

Hmmm who would you want to trust with complex decisions at the international level?

69. Not delegates. SDEs and results now show they are one tenth of one % apart

Simply put, SDEs are not delegates. But with some math, SDEs are converted to the proportional amount of delegates a candidate gets in each precinct.

They will likely get the same number of actual delegates.

So Pete might be +1 in final delegates even though the results are virtually identical, if that is true.
