With 28 years in office and a current salary of $174,000, Sanders is entitled to around $73,000 a year from the federal government for the rest of his life. If he were to sell that guaranteed income stream for a lump-sum pile of cash, Forbes figures he could get around $650,000 for it.'

(25,456 posts)And, even if they do, if something this minor will drive them away from the party, then perhaps politics isn't for them. Lucky for us, in the real world, I doubt your assertion has any validity. I don't think young people sit around waiting for Martin O'Malley to drive them away from the party because of one tweet.
"Every leading voice in the Democratic Party who unloads on (insert any candidate here) for reasons other than policy is helping drive away some small percent of young voters in particular away from the Democratic Party."
Based on your logic, the above statement is equally valid. Do you post the same sentiments on threads regarding the other candidates or just yours?

(22,912 posts)It directly amplifies a recent complaint by one of the direct participants in the 2016 race, which has more potentially divisive impact, in my opinion, than a complaint made by any candidate supporter on either side. But I grant that you make a fair point.

(15,642 posts)relative. Some small percent of young Biden supporters is far different than some small percent of young Sanders supporters.
On another note, you may see the attacks as equal from both sides. I dont. Perhaps Sanders supporters are more passionate and raw in their style and behavior. But theres also truth in their belief that the system works against their interests, including the party establishment by favoring specific candidates as well as relative status quo. Personally, from what Ive seen and experienced in my 69 year life, I have no doubt about that.

(42,862 posts)Yet nary a word of complaint when the entire Democratic Party is smeared and denigrated with LIES that Democrats are "ideologically bankrupt"... or that that Democrats are "feeble".
Doesn't it ALSO "help to drive away" voters from the Democratic party (a little here, a little there) when the Democratic party is falsely portrayed as being "corrupt" and an "absolute failure"?
What good purpose does it serve for anyone to continually spread lies that Democratic party is "the party of the one-percent" and that we're the "party of the elite".
How does it attract new voters and "young voters" when they're being told that there's "no difference between Democrats and Republicans" and that the Democrats are "do-nothings"?
I, for one, am GRATEFUL to Marton O'Malley for having the courage to speak up and tell the TRUTH. As you noted, there are often consequences for telling the truth but O'Malley is showing us the courage of his convictions.
At least he hasn't told divisive lies about how the Democratic party "doesn't care about climate change" or that the Democrats "focus too much" on diversity.
None of those things are true... but when people in power and when notable (famous) individuals use their "star power" to smear and denigrate the Democrats, well, that only creates long term division and it stokes resentment and distrust. And over time I guess "it all adds up" and people begin to believe the LIE that the Democrats are the same as the GOP and they stop supporting Democrats (from the top to the bottom) and in the long run, that only serves to benefit the GOP, and Trump, and Russia.
Why would anyone purposely do things that HARM our great party and which, in turn, ultimately BENEFIT the Republicans? It's a fair question that deserves and answer. Why would anyone defend (or ignore) that destructive behavior without saying anything... without calling it out... without expressing their disapproval. --- In the end, silence and apathy equal approval and agreement, right?
It's also NOT TRUE that people who the refuse to vote for an African-American because of his skin color "aren't racists". It's also NOT TRUE that the Democrats who "are very big into diversity" aren't "particularly sympathetic" to the working class.
I'm just trying to say, and all I want to know is... what good purpose does that serve? Why is it okay to smear an entire party, but some find it so unutterably offensive to legitimately criticize the policies and actions (or inaction) of another?

(82,383 posts)Tell them this is all part of the hurdy-gurdy of a presidential campaign. Every candidate gets criticized. Any candidate worth their salt has something in their past. Pure candidates would have no history, no experience, and nothing to talk about, which would mean they are not charismatic or inspiring.
Also explain that Dotard is going to insult Bernie. If Bernie is the nominee then Dotard is going to have a field day. They need to toughen up for that.

in his campaign who proudly did not vote for the Democratic candidate in the general in 16 . As for the gist of O'Malley's claims, I don't think Sanders helped near enough in 16 to elect Hillary Clinton...I was unaware that he insisted upon private planes for OH, WI or PA so... much for a green new deal. The fact that so many may stay home and not vote for Sanders is a good reason to look elsewhere for a nominee IMHO. We have so much talent...why take the risk? I will of course vote for the Democratic nominee ....and that would include Sanders should he be the nominee.

NEWS ALERT: Not everything is personal. Not everything is a vendetta. People honestly have legitimate and rational issues with BS... with his campaign... with his staff... with his philosophy... with his attitude... with his demeanor... with his personality. It doesn't always have be be motivated by some sort of juvenile or petty "revenge" as your question implies. Martin O'Malley is a rational adult who knows what he saw and what he observed... and how it differed from his own efforts. He's pointing out things that many here are afraid to (for obvious reasons) and the things he's talking about deserve to be discussed.
I'm grateful for his honesty and for bringing things like this out into the open. He's absolutely correct.

(42,862 posts)He's the type of man who values the party more than the ego of an individual or that of their supporters. and so do I. He's the type of man who can see the big picture rather being concerned with "hurt feelings" and needing to massage the egos.
All I'm saying is that this is so much bigger than one person. And anyone who thinks they deserve to become our nation's leader and the leader of the free world needs to be someone who doesn't get so upset by what others think or say.
Bernie isn't being "trashed"... Martin O'Malley is being totally honest and simply telling it like it is. Now is not the time for false humility and being "polite" for its own sake. Too much is at stake to worry about Bernie's "hurt feelings".
