<snip>
"Democratic primary candidate Pete Buttigieg made history as the first out gay man and LGBTQ person to win the Iowa caucus. That also makes him the first to get delegates to the national convention, where the official candidate will be chosen.
That moment was felt all over the nation by LGBTQ people who have seen their rights and acceptance grow dramatically over the last couple of decades. It wasnt until 1987 that homosexuality wasnt considered a mental illness; now a gay person could potentially be elected president.
Buttigiegs win, however, was tiny. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) trailed Buttigieg by 0.1%. The total earned Buttigieg two extra delegates than Sanders 564 to 562.
Sanders ignored the historic moment and declared a very strong victory during a speech in New Hampshire. His supporters have become notorious for viciously attacking other candidates and bullying their supporters on social media, a phenomenon Sanders has done little to tamp down or denounce.
And while LGBTQ people were celebrating the weight of the slim victory, several Sanders supporters took the opportunity to downplay the moment, insult Buttigieg, and denigrate people who despite their choice of candidate were moved by the experience. Many of the insults were lobbed by straight people."

(10,570 posts)New High in Willingness to Vote for a Gay Candidate
As openly gay South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg's campaign for president has generated buzz in the Democratic nomination race, 76% of Americans report a willingness to vote for a gay or lesbian candidate -- a new high in Gallup's trend.
Americans are now about three times as likely to say they would vote for a qualified gay or lesbian candidate for president as they were when Gallup first asked the question in 1978.
as apposed to say age...
With a wide range of ages in the current field of candidates for president, Gallup finds that most Americans are willing to vote for a candidate over the age of 70 (63%), and an even larger majority would vote for a candidate under the age of 40 (71%).

(38,687 posts)Like legislation. And everything for all.
So last night when Bernie lost they willed it into Bernie won. Even though he obviously lost.
And since Pete is the real winner and threatens willed winner he has to go.

(38,687 posts)From their den:
'The delay in the vote reporting denied a victory speech to Senator Bernie Sanders, the presumptive winner of the opening contest in the Democratic presidential primary. Though not one exit poll indicated that Buttigieg would have won, the South Bend, Indiana mayor took to Twitter to confidently proclaim himself the victor.'

(16,844 posts)I never thought I'd see a gay man win it. This is most certainly an historic day. It reminds me that even though there's a lot of horrible shit happening in our country, there are great things happening too. It's still worth fighting for.

(13,058 posts)and give African Americans a chance to vote for him in the GE, Pete has got to get the most delegates first, and without increasing his support among communities of color I don't think it will happen. No insult was intended.
