(6,133 posts)Gee you ding dong, that is what Trump will do to you.
He said in the past that he couldnt imagine Bernie helping someone roadside.
Lately I think Chris, whos mouth has sputtered on endlessly for more than a generation, with many good points, has lessened to nothing more to just old grandpa yelling at something.

(53,763 posts)one of the two generations (maybe a generation and a halfboomers and older GenXers) who where schooled to fear commies/reds/the USSR, the domino theory, etc. and that's quite a large swathe of voters.
I know many who are younger say that the stigma against socialism has lessened considerably but that may just be among their cohort. There are still millions, millions of voters who are still wary about socialism and that large swathe of voters is not going to vote for Sanders if he gets the nominationand among those voters, you can bet, are some Democrats, not to mention independents and never-trump republicans, all of whom we need to defeat trump in November.

scheming daemons
(25,487 posts)It conjures images of Fidel Castro, Leonid Brezhnev, Nikita Khrushkev, Mao Zedong.
It is absolutely toxic.... and it is why Bernie gets 5% among older Americans, who see what "socialism" has meant for most of last 100 years.
And Bernie's past quotes about communism/socialism will most definitely come back to haunt him. The "honeymoon in Moscow" thing is damaging.
Young people don't have a negative view of the word.... but young people are too small of a voting block to carry the day.
Matthews isn't entirely wrong.

You'll see a difference like that in just about every state..... 5-6% support among voters who were around and in adulthood during the USSR.

(58,785 posts)socialist nations have always failed, with their people suffering terribly. People who want socialism for themselves have always been able to join/buy into collective enterprises and live their ideology. They're not popular, but we've always had them for those who do want it.
Older people also know how good things were during the New Deal era until 1980 when majorities were persuaded to replace liberal dominated government with conservative and dismantle our regulatory protections. Well controlled capitalist governments have created the kind of general prosperity that socialist governments have always failed.
Of course older people aren't interested in what Sanders is selling.
But some also know there is something to fear about him, and that is POPULISM. Sanders' ideological goal is socialism, but the destructive passion of populist rebellion is the tool he's chosen to clear the way for it. For 50 years he hasn't been able to give socialism away to Americans, but populist movements can and do destroy what majorities value and replace with what their strongman leader chooses.
Or in this case with what the Republicans and Russia choose. Sanders' populist power is a weak shadow of the fascistic RW populism lead by Trump/Repubs and assisted to destruction by Russia. Sanders would last only as long as he was useful in clearing the way.

(15,751 posts)More to the point. BS is fairly toxic to 70% of the DU vote in our poll. Imagine what it is with the rest of the voters.

(14,569 posts)Pretty interesting how panicky some people get. Of course, Matthews said Obama gave him a 'tingly feeling' in his legs.
Matthews has genuinely bought into American exceptionalism. Problem is, the only things we're exceptional at these days are killing lots of people really fast (we've ALWAYS been good at that), and systematically transferring wealth from American taxpayers to billionaire parasites.

(121 posts)There is only so much tv I can watch, so Rachel Maddow is the one I don't miss, maybe give Lawrence a try and I like the panels and summaries of the day by Brian Williams.
So, it has been years since I watched more than 10 minutes of Chris Matthews.
But I remember when Ukraine kicked out their pro Russian President and everybody was celebrating, it was Chris Matthews who struck a worried tone.
I was getting aggravated by him, but shortly afterward, Russia invaded Crimea, proving that he knew better than me.

(2,461 posts)I'm 59. When I was 28 the Soviet Union broke up. Funded largely by right wing forces in the Vatican - same ones Bannon and Barr hang out with. Being Canadian, Castro was a kind of hero to the majority of the country, but we had Trudeau the elder. Your press worked overtime to demonize him. Just as they are working overtime to demonize BDS and keep you in the dark on that one.
I have seen many polls that show over 50 is 55/45 vote republican. The socialist thing: Is it just a convenient trope to justify 'I've got mine, now eff off?'
