(40,270 posts)Trump is the enemy, and Bloomberg knows it.
The others seem to be preoccupied bashing each other and feeding the GOP campaign machine.

and I'm afraid it would take a lot more than $150 to make Bloomberg look cool.

(3,379 posts)$150 is chump change to successful Instagram influencers, who do campaigns worth thousands. However, many small fry influencers may be willing to lap this up.

(4,533 posts)I am not opposed to spending money to counter voter suppression. I favor hiring popular performers to appear next to voting precincts, to increase voting turnout by those who otherwise wouldnt vote. I favor spending to increase voter registration. I support advertising to provide honest information. Of course we should provide public funds for political campaigns. It is much cheaper to have the public give money to politicians than to permit special interests to do it. I agree it is unconstitutional to prohibit special interests from stating their views but we can counter their undue influence by generous public funding.

(3,433 posts)Yes, it's terrible. But yes, that's a tool for spreading attention.
It's in authentic.
It's corrupting.
It's unsustainable.
But it works.
Others will use it.
What's the successful but alternative?

(22,336 posts)That's what advertising looks like in 2020. Nobody is going to win if they don't advertise the way people advertise today. It isn't the 1980s anymore. All advertising is inauthentic.

(3,433 posts)Democracy is about representing your individual and collective beliefs through representative elections.
Buying attention through paying influencers is a form of corrupting democracy. But it works, and is a modern tool of advertising.
We just can't ignore the uniquely bad impacts it's having on democracy.

(22,336 posts)It doens't matter where you advertise. If you advertise on TV or radio, you are still selling yourself like a product. It being advertising on social media doesn't make it worse or more inauthentic. It's all inauthentic. And nobody is going to win without advertising, and beyond that nobody is going to win in 2020 without using current methods of advertising, including on social media.

(22,336 posts)I want someone who knows how to use social media advertising in effective ways. I don't want someone who thinks modern styles of advertising show less integrity than any other style of advertising and then try to fight a 2020 campaign in ways that would have worked in the 1980s or 1990s. We need a candidate who is willing to actually work to win.

(22,336 posts)He's just paying social media advertisers, which is what "influencers" are, to advertise for him. That's a big advertising method these days. Are other campaigns really going to ignore a major way people advertise?

(6,154 posts)So far he's used his wealth to paint a pretty picture of himself by hiring probably the finest advertising wizards money can buy. I like the images I'm seeing. I see then every time I view something on youtube. I see him everywhere I go in the media, whether it's online or on TV.
There's something missing here. What's missing is Mike Bloomberg live. I need to know if the Mike I see live matches the persona of himself he has created by using his wealth and media savvy. Is the advertising image a facade or is this true representation of the real Mike.
Inquiring minds want to know. We need to know. I'm looking forward to seeing how the live Mike compares with the advertised Mike.

(3,379 posts)Poor, trying to pay off my mom's funeral. I'd take $150. I can see how this is extremely tempting to many people. Trump has paid actors at his rallies.*shrug* God knows what other candidates have been willing to pay for. We know that what we once considered "normal" is no longer applicable.
