Robert De Niro Praises 'Grown-Up' Michael Bloomberg: 'Might Be The One' to Defeat Trump

Academy Award-winning actor and vocal Trump critic Robert De Niro praised former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and said his campaign “might be the one” to win the 2020 Democratic nomination and defeat President Donald Trump. Speaking with Stephen Colbert on CBS’ Late Show, De Niro contrasted Bloomberg with the “fake president” Trump.

“There are a lot of people who want to replace him,” Colbert said, alluding the large field of Democrats running in the presidential primary. “You’re a new Yorker. Bloomberg officially announced. You know him, right?”

“A little bit, yes,” De Niro said. “I like Bloomberg. He’s an adult. He’s a grownup,” the actor added to laughter and applause.

“He’s run the city for 12 years,” Colbert said. “I know there are things he did, you mentioned them on the show, but he’s done good things, and he tries to do the right thing. He’s put his money where his mouth is when it comes to climate change and certainly gun policy.”

De Niro agreed, and said: “So, you know, we just have to get past this — get over the hump into calm waters, and, so, to me, Bloomberg might be the one.”

I was holding out hoping that Joe would have the fire within him. I love Joe but there was a reason Obama told him he didn't have to do this.

When people insulted President Obama's family, he blew it off as stupid and maintained his course. When someone questions Joe's family, Joe appears to want to tear them a new one, it that control in the moment when angered that Joe don't seem to have, and he doesn't look good angry.

Time will tell. I do love his outside the box, smart strategies, and think he represents something different, yet with potential to appeal broadly. And he presents as so smart but also edgy, seasoned. Has momentum. I switched from Joe, feel sad about that (guilty), for now!

Throughout our history, there have been transformative Presidents (Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Wilson, FDR, Truman, JFK, LBJ, Clinton, Obama -despite their shortcomings) and there have been Presidents that calmed rough waters (Grant, FDR again, Truman again, LBJ again, Carter). I believe the next President will have to calm rough waters out of the gate, there likely will be nothing transformative about that presidency due to the hard and difficult work of just getting our heads back above water. Such a role better fits a Biden or a Bloomberg or a Buttigieg or a Klobuchar more than it does people shooting for large transformation like Warren and Sanders. What we would need to do is follow that water calming President up with a democrat that will have a transformative Presidency, we have had a three chances in my lifetime (after Johnson, after Clinton, after Obama) and we blew every single one of them.

This isn't a transformative election. This is an election that will answer the challenge, "A Republic if you can keep it". I wish I had a magic 8 ball or a crystal ball to see the possible futures, but none of us do. I like all of the Dem candidates however, I don't think all of them have an equal chance in the general nor do I think all of them have equal coattails. This has to be an election against Trump and for our Democratic Republic.

primary today, I would vote for:
