Can anyone explain why Elizabeth Warren isn't doing better?

She was off to a great start, the kind of start winning candidates have in the early months of an election cycle.

Her anti-corruption message has been so strong. She has pinpointed the reason things don't work in our country anymore.

I think she is the only candidate who has promised to go after Trump and his cronies after they are out of office.

She is incredibly likable. Who doesn't like Elizabeth Warren, the human being?

She's been consistent throughout her career on a core set of issues and values.

She's not attacking other candidates and has only run a positive campaign.

I just don't understand.

EDIT: Warren did well in Iowa and not enough was said about that. This post was made in frustration at some new polling released this morning that shows her polling at 9%, distant fourth place, in NH.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Mon Feb 10, 2020, 08:26 AM

And it wasn't just twitter...

Comments on this article in the SacBee include: "Harris is a shrill, arrogant, divisive, abusive, race-baiting, man-hating, anti-Catholic bigot."

https://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article232072042.html

https://pjmedia.com/rogerlsimon/what-i-said-about-kamala-harris-was-an-understatement/

But don't look for the Starbucks founder's tweet online because the presidential candidate-in-waiting deleted it within hours. The ever-present Twitter posse had already decided that I--and by extension Schultz for acknowledging me--had committed a cardinal sin. In modern parlance, I threw shade on two women in the most sexist manner in my column, calling Kamala Harris "shrill" (also a "quasi-socialist," but that didn't seem to stick in as many craws) and disparaging Sen Elizabeth Warren as "Fauxcohontas." (I am about the twelfth millionth to have done that.)

Harris has carefully moderated her vocal tone to try to prevent being called "shrill":

She noted how, in the first debate in the Democratic primary, Senator Kamala Harris’s carefully measured tone as she confronted former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. was widely praised.

“Her pace was the delivery technique that enabled her to command the stage,” said Ms. Jahnke. “If you listen carefully, you will notice how slowly she is speaking and how she uses pauses to add drama.”

I think it is her Medicare-for-all stance (not that that's a bad idea). Nearly all, if not the only, criticism of her plans that I've heard has been that her Medicare-for-all plan would take away private insurance, that many people may want to keep. Nearly every commentator, who I've heard say something about her, mentions that as a problem with her strategy. Sad part is, most commentators don't even talk about her. You know, because... woman.

It was a tough choice: saying you can't keep your current plan alienates a lot of people nationally, and saying you don't want Medicare For All alienates a lot of people in the party. But one of those sentences must be true. Sanders just ignores the question and the media lets him get away with it; Warren was actually honest and forthright about the kind of health care system she wanted to work for and (as you mention) how she would pay for it.

Unfortunately honesty isn't always a winning political policy.

Warren is a stickler for details and studies and empirical evidence. She read the studies that have been consistent for decades that single payer is the most cost effective choice and covers the most people. It isn’t socialist or radical.

Thank you for Obamacare. But it was the Republican plan for decades. And the reason Democrats fought it since Nixon was because we knew the very problems that are being complained about now were known flaws. Single payer beats the crap out of any other plan. Anything short of that is actually the more expensive option.

Throw in people like Chris Matthews equating socialism with communism and you stir up the Bernie fears. Those fears spill over to the candidate perceived as next closest on the political spectrum.

Warren also seems to get the tougher questions. Like the CNN town halls, Biden did great but also filibustered so he had far less questions. Yang was tossed softballs the whole time. Warren got tough audience questions and difficult follow ups by Bothsider Cuomo.

It's just like what was done with Hillary in 2016 ... and in 2008.

"Yes, we WANT a woman candidate. Just NOT THIS woman candidate!"

And Hillary in 2016 was the MOST qualified Presidential candidate EVER!

Women candidates all have to be "perfect" and "acceptable" to every single voter or they're not deemed to be "electable" by the PTB and the media pundits.

Sun Feb 9, 2020, 01:04 PM

If media reports from Iowa and New Hampshire can be believed (and I would add to those anecdotal accounts of the decisions and indecisions of friends and family), people are desperate to determine the candidate they think can win (read: defeat Trump). Policies and everything else aside.

I do think the "woman can't win" fear factor injected by Sanders has landed squarely on her head. Add to that the rather male dominated demographics of the further left (all the candidates are "left" ), people in that camp have headed for the pater familias.

I think that perhaps she makes the swiftboating too easy by ALWAYS saying the exact words in the same way...and for a lot of folks, the bigger the plan, the scarier for the voter or family, or economy; 2) I recognize the practicality of her campaign wardrobe being neat, comfortable, and non-offensively modest/androgenous, but I'd sure like to see a suit w/skirt, a smart dress, or a piece of tasteful jewelry or accessory; 3) She somehow got paired with Sander's wild "revolution" over a one-time dramatic change w/M4A. 4) She's had pretty good success so far avoiding the need for "big money" donors and PACS in some of the same ways Howard Dean attracted participation, but look what happened there courtesy of the MSM, et al.

None of that detracts about how smart and committed she is about doing right within rule of law for all Americans. I hate the corruption the permeates the institutions of this country and every political process, exemplified, endorsed, and executed by that monster in the WH. She's a good teacher, been a good student, and life is the pop quiz. Go, Elizabeth!

I'd very happily vote for Warren.

I think it's mostly her manner. She doesn't have the "presidential voice". Now, some of that is because she's a woman, and we're not used to women in that position, but it isn't all of it.

that she can't deliver, her going from MFA will cost $3.5 T annually to $5.2 T in a month shows she hasn't fleshed her promises out, she bashes the wealthy even though she will need lots of million/billionaires to fund her promises if she wants to keep from taxing the middle-class heavily, she criticized Obama -- and Clinton by association -- right up until November 2016 on trade (helping give us trump), etc.

I really want a woman for 2020, but I could support Warren only if she gets nomination.

Was John Kerry lying that he was Irish, or, did he find out later in life that he was, in fact, Jewish? His grandfather created an entirely different background to escape persecution.

I’d say millions and millions of families have some beliefs concerning their backgrounds that just aren’t accurate. More each day. When was the last time you checked yours?

BTW, you do know Trump’s family pretended to be Swedish for years because they didn’t want to lose high-rent paying Jews during and after WW2, right? Or do you only have a problem with Warren?

when I hear Warren talk, I feel that I've heard it all before. At first it was an impressive list of plans, but soon it just seemed repetitive. I find Amy to be more flexible and 'fresh' - if that is a thing.

Something I do with my recently graduated Ivy League poli sci major daughter when we watch the debates. After each question, we pause the video and predict what the answer will be. It makes one appreciate a new take on a frequent query, and illuminates who is able to bring a novel approach, even if not changing their basic platform. Warren's answers have been some of the most predictable, which I believe, can lead to less excitement about a candidate.

She took a big hit when she released the cost of her health plan.

Being a woman, she has to work twice as hard to get the same amount of attention and support, and she didn't seem to know how to force her way back from that big hit.

Her attack on Bernie was bizarre from start to finish and now they are good buddies again. I don't know what the average primary voter thinks of that, but it can't be good.

Her loss of popularity translated into Bernie's momentum and the laws of political 'physics' clearly include a 'gender coefficient,' making the male in the equation almost unstoppable.

At the beginning, there was this perception that Warren was more like Sanders. That even if Sanders lost, we still had warren and she would fight for the changes we wanted and needed.

When she didn't endorse Sanders that made a lot of people mad. There started being doubts if she as really as behind these policies as she claimed. But most brushed it aside as the kind of political calculations we expect from politicians. I was one of those.

So going into this she started off pretty good.

Then Warren released her Medicare for all plan and it ... did not look good. It cast doubt on whether she was really serious about Medicare for All. Then it seemed she was even moving away from the idea altogether. We can argue what was in Warren's heart of hearts but that was the perception and it hurt her.

We kept waiting for Warren to go after Biden over his vote on the Bankruptcy bill. And him falsely taking credit for her work for the Consumer Protection Bureau. But she never did. What she did do is engage ina He Said/She said over a year old conversation that no one could prove.

it also didn't help her that at least for a while, Obama seemed to be pushing her without outright coming out and sayign it. And she started taking on Hillary advisors. And taking advice from Clinton herself. All of which further reinforced the idea that Waren was just another political insider who talked change but didn't' really mean it.

So yeah, people just don't trust her anymore.

This is, I am sure, hard to hear for some. I expect many won't understand it when I say moving closer to Clinton hurt Warren. And I myself still have Warren as my second choice. But I am still .. disappointed.

But my point is a lot of people think "Maybe they don't openly support her now. But how long will that last?"

When I said how the establishment seemed to be helping her, I wasn't saying they suddenly agreed with her stated positions. It was because they thought she could be coopted to use to keep Sanders at bay.

Have you ever seen AOC talking about the pressure in Congres to conform?

I love her anti-corruption campaign focus!!! I wish the media would give her that coverage.

93. Sexism, MFA plan rollout, Sanders

Sexism is a constant factor.

The MFA debate hurt her when she was peaking.

It's tough for two progressive candidates to get traction.

I hope she beats expectations in NH. She's a positive campaigner and her sincerity and determination are to be admired. But it's a crowded field and she doesn't get her due, IMO.

100. She was honest about how she would pay for her programs

That was when the nosedive started. But, yeah, also sexism: she beat Biden in Iowa and as far as I can tell no press have ever mentioned that.

102. She was naive about Democratic voters

She was honest about taking away all private insurance - apparently didn’t see the slew of polls that said a majority of people are happy with their insurance, or naively believed that she could sell these people on a government run program instead. Definitely should have done what Bernie is doing - skate past the details and just promise the free lunch like a regular politician. She’d still be my number one choice if ahole wasn’t in the WH.

104. She replies to every question with the same answer

She is spot on in her assessment of economic inequality and her plans are the most detailed, direct, thorough and thoughtful.

However, I feel she is in the campaign bubble and has become almost robotic in her presentation. For example, in the NH debate when asked about investigating Trump if she were elected, she correctly said no one should be above the law. What she didn’t (or at least I didn’t hear it) say was that Trump’s obstruction on Congress leaves the next President no choice, as we don’t know what else he has done. She could have emphasized his narcissistic behavior, and list the ways this has played out, such as diverting funds to his businesses and “the wall”. She could have noted the wall fell down and said given his business history, we need to find out how this was contracted etc....

Instead she pivoted to a canned stump speech about the 1%.... I’ve heard it, you’ve heard it and I bet anyone seeing that debate heard it before. The problem is, saying the same thing, with the same words loses listeners.

Note: I too am frustrated, as I originally supported her.

Lobbyist put a lot of money into attacking her for it, and it has hurt her some, but if she takes Amy's pattern she'll go back up a lot more. She is the smartest of all the candidates, and likely feared the most by trump and putin. If Joe loses more support his support will go to her before Bernie or Mayor Pete.

Had AOC backed Warren, instead, Sanders' and Warren's relative positions in the left lane would be reversed, I think.

109. She's being overpowered by the male candidates, I'm afraid.

So is Amy Klobuchar. The men stand there in the debate, pointing their fingers and raising their voiced to get the most notice from everyone. Neither Warren nor Klobuchar can compete with that on the public stage, unfortunately.

Neither has the massive name recognition that Hillary Clinton had. Frankly, most people outside of their own states are unfamiliar with either woman, despite their being Senators.

That's the bottom line here. Biden's well known, since he was Vice President, and Bernie Sanders ran in 2016 for the nomination and gained wide recognition as a leading primary candidate.

Whatever we might wish, presidential elections are still largely popularity contests among people who are already celebrities. while Pete Buttigieg is doing well in the first two primaries, there are 48 more of them yet to come.

My hope in 2020 is that a woman will be picked as the VP candidate. That will put her in the spotlight for four years, at least.
