Joe Biden provides the material himself, and then his supporters call it a ‘smear’ when others point it out. I’m 65, and I’d never heard that line before - yet he assumed someone much younger would understand. That’s the thing about attempting ‘folksy’; you run the chance of coming off as insulting or obtuse.

For the sake of argument, if someone like Yang used a phrase that some older voters wouldn't understand, do the same standards apply? Is that insulting as well?

Or does it only apply to older candidates making statements that 100% of the audience won't get?

either, but I was never a fan of John Wayne or of westerns

However, without knowing the source of the comment, I could tell that the words themselves were so out of mainstream conversation that they had to benan intentional exaggeration to make a joke. That was further made clear by his soft tone when saying them. His young audience perceived it as a joke, too, and laughed. They probably did not know the source and chalked it up to "old guy" talk, meant to be funny, not insulting.

We're shooting ouselves in the foot by attacking each other over things like this. Time to stop looking for insults to get enraged over among our own..

Instead of claiming misogyny or racism over this remark, it's more productive to have a rational discussion over whether this kind of comment can hurt him in the general election and weigh that against his considerable experience for handling the mess Trump has made. Also discus his ability to draw votes, or not, across the country.

Weigh his chances in the general vs. the chances of candidates who must continually defend and explain their positions while identifying with a term that the majority of Americans automatically reject, e.g. socialism. Personally, I support some social-economic changes, but tagging them with the word "socialism" invites rejection. Please don't flood me with explanations of what it means; I get it. But the general population will not.

A good running mate for Biden could help him in the general, like Klobuchar. Bernie and Eluzabeth can still promote their changes from within the Senate if they don't win the nomination.

Just stop the cannibalistic fights, please. They play into the Trump strategy of division.

it's probably best to find something else to say. I don't understand how an experienced politician has this much trouble with a very easy rule of thumb. Trump has never been held accountable and I am not abou5t to give the benefit of the doubt to a Democrat for something that I have thought about Trump all along. If you don't want to see a particular behavior among kids bullying each other, it is absolutely a deal breaker for a candidate.

63. He doesn't need to remind us by making a young woman think she's being insulted.

"Dog-faced"? He should have known better. His famous empathy was missing in that moment. He should have realized that she had to be brave to stand up and ask that question at all. She deserved a thoughtful response, not a joke that could come off as an insult.

Seems like a dumb way to ask for college students' votes.

What happened next left her a little shaken, Moore said.

Is "lying" the funny part, or "dog faced," or "pony soldier"? Or is it the combo all together that makes it okay to throw at someone asking a question in good faith at a town hall?

Every Western he did was also horribly racist. We don't need to keep romanticizing anything he did.

I remember the faux outrage months ago when he complemented a little girl. Her parents were thrilled, the little girl was thrilled, the only ones not thrilled were the Biden haters

I didn't recognize the phrase as having come from a John Wayne movie, and yet I could still tell he used it as a "pretend" insult to the student as part of his friendly back-and-forth with audience members.

If anyone called me dog-faced or horse-faced. Unless someone insults you first, those are fighting words. It is inappropriate for a candidate to use words like that no matter who or when someone else said them.

When I first heard him say it, I was shocked, but then I heard his tone and figured it was a Bidenism. Nothing to see here.
