Sanders glides toward primary day as moderates brawl

Politico

"It’s fratricide at the moment," said one Democrat.

By HOLLY OTTERBEIN and STEPHANIE MURRAY

PLYMOUTH, New Hampshire — Bernie Sanders was battered in Iowa with more than $800,000 in TV attack ads that labeled him a socialist and argued he couldn’t beat President Trump.

Here in New Hampshire, the opposite has happened: The airwaves are free of anti-Sanders spots in the days before the first-in-the-nation-primary, and he’s watching the moderates shank each other.

Tom Steyer is largely training his advertising firepower onto Pete Buttigieg and Joe Biden. The former vice president is mocking Buttigieg’s experience and targeting him in a digital spot. Fighting back against Biden, the ex-mayor says he’s tired of being a punchline.

The strength of the Vermont senator — who is polling first in the state with Buttigieg closely behind him — and the sudden lack of resistance to him on the airwaves is sparking anxiety among some moderate Democratic leaders.

“It’s fratricide at the moment,” said a prominent moderate in Washington. “It’s super bad. Too many mods against Bernie and a fading Warren. Very, very scary.”

4. Thanks for pointing out the 6000 more votes! That means much more to me than any negative comment...

6. Roughly the same turnout in two elections

49.6% in 2016. 26.1% in 2020. That's a very significant drop in support ... unable to get tens of thousands to go out for him a second time. I wouldn't call that a resounding success.

12. 1st or second isn't the point

He had nearly 80,000 votes before and 40-some thousand votes this time. That's a major loss of support. If he had kept the same level of support, it should've been a runaway victory, in a caucus state where activists have a distinct advantage. But you asked why the word "crashed" was used .... there it is.

13. did u ask msongs ? since you are answering for her and all?

we both know there were many more candidates in this caucus than last time so the vote naturally will be split...hopefully the democratic turnout in general will not have a major loss of support

3. Just so you realize

That will end instantly once a nominee is chosen. Are the Sanders supporters ready to do the same thing if they lose?

9. As I've said, Biden's attacks on Buttigieg are questionable. At this point, Biden would...

...be best served by Buttigieg winning NH. I think a lot of DUers recognize this, because there's post after post touting Buttigieg's "big" win in Iowa. Buttigieg isn't really that much of a threat due to his total alienation of Black folks and his lack of experience. He doesn't have the kind of following that can make up for that in the way Sanders does. Sanders losing NH would benefit Biden.
