(25,471 posts)Well within the MOE, of course.
These polls have Biden with a slight edge over Sanders vs. Trump:
NBC News/WSJ
IBD/TIPP (Trump is +2 on Sanders)
LA Times/USC
ABC News/WaPo
Fox News
Most of the polls show several of our candidates with a lead on Trump.

All that being said, national head-to-head polls don't really mean anything. The important ones are head-to-head polls in swing states, especially the states we barely lost in 2016.

(12,618 posts)Which is why all this infighting and saying "Sanders can't win" or "Biden can't win" is stupid. We have a crop of great candidates running and they all have a solid chance of winning. I will vote for and be happy with any of them.

(20,709 posts)Polls say otherwise. Prediction markets say otherwise. And the pundits making the argument that Bernie's not electable have a horrible track record of political forecasts.

(68,565 posts)will stick as it is all new...If I thought he would win , I would vote for Sanders 100 times but he won't. He may lose states like Virginia and Delaware as well...it will be a huge loss like Dukakis and McGovern...I pray we keep the house if he is the nominee...that is what I believe. I hate Trump far more than I dislike Sanders. He would have my vote if I thought he could win. Sanders has my vote in a general.

(12,618 posts)His nickname for him is, "Crazy Bernie" and he has repeatedly warned against the dangers of a "socialist takeover." How is that not trashing Bernie?

I like Bernie, Trump said on Tuesday. I wish Bernie well. It will be interesting to see how he does. I think what happened to Bernie maybe was not so nice. I think he was taken advantage of. He ran great four years ago, and he was not treated with respect by Clinton.
More stuff is available...Trump wants Sanders to be the nominee...which is why he went after Biden...

(68,565 posts)look at the Mid terms where 39 moderates flipped GOP seats and won back the house... those on the left flipped none. This is a center left country maybe even center right after Trump...and the Senate, the states show this clearly...and those who think the party should move left before the country will lose the 2020 election and beyond because the truth is without the blue wall states, we have no path to the presidency...now or in the future.

So again, I'll go by the polls and the changing demographics of the electorate.

(68,565 posts)show a different story...say what you want but Sanders won't win a general when Trump gets done with him, he will lose the Blue Wall. But I think Biden wins or Bloomberg wins the primary and we have a chance.

Would change matchups IMHO

(12,618 posts)As it is, all they really have is the "socialist" label. While that may freak out fat old white men and freepers, not too many others are really going to give a shit. That's wghere i think all the Bernie doomsayers are wrong.
The electorate is different today than it was 20 years ago. Way different. And the generations that have grown up with the failures of capitalism are now of voting age. The socialist label doesn't scare them anymroe. The cold war is over. And many of them are, in fact, drawn to it.

(12,618 posts)It took 3 years of the most phony and bloody war in 30 years for us to win it back.
The old, white, conservative generations are dying out and being replaced by younger, more diverse voters. We are in a much better position to win elections by running on liberal ideas than we were 20 years ago.

(48,975 posts)of varying results, includig some polls where Trump beats all our top candidates, and some where all our top candidates beat him:
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/president-general/
And yes, there have been some polls where Sanders does as well as, or slightly better than, Biden against Trump.
There's also been at least one poll where Buttigieg did better against Trump than any other Democratic candidate.
My main caveat on ALL these polls is that, except for Biden, none of our candidates have been subjected to about a year of attacks by Trump and the GOP.
Biden's still polling well against Trump despite all the attacks. He does better against Trump than our other candidates in the vast majority of GE polls for the last year.
We simply have no way to know how well any of the other candidates will hold up under that sort of onslaught.

(12,618 posts)of which there are quite a few this election, being all that much swayed by Trump's attacks. You give Trump too much credit if you think that his words are going to have much effect on anybody at this point beyind the cult that has already embraced him. And the truth is, I could see the opposite happening. The more Trump attacks Sander's as a socialist, the more I could see people, especially young people, being drawn to him.

(12,618 posts)turnout in midterms between 2014 and 2018. Give them a candidate that really inspires them, and they'll do the same in 2020. They'll make up between 37% to 40% of the electorate in 2020. Win that overwhelmingly, and we could literally lose every other generation (although that's unlikely, Generation X, which makes up another 25%, leans liberal) and we could still win.

(4,391 posts)Sanders has the first and not the second, so I think any difference will be favorable to him at this point. The trillion dollar question is how he handles a full, general campaign and whether he has resilience, whether he can sell his ideas of what he will actually do (or better yet, what he will keep Trump from doing in a second term), and whether he can navigate the inevitable minefield of the Lee Atwater playbook of banging home whatever questionable (or not questionable, I haven't looked that closely in Sanders' skeleton closet) garbage they can cook (Gore the liar, Obama the Black Panther, Kerry the Viet Cong, email, etc.).
