Anxiety of a Bernie Sanders Democrat ticket begins to spread down the ballot in Miami

Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’ strong showing in the Iowa caucuses and his polling lead heading into Tuesday’s first-in-the-nation primary are creating anxiety among Democrats who fear that having a self-described “democratic socialist” at the top of the ticket would hurt candidates in state and federal races....

“If he’s at the top of the ticket in 2020, it’s going to be a bad year for Democrats in Florida,” said state Rep. Javier Fernandez, a Cuban-American attorney campaigning to flip what should be a competitive Miami-area state Senate seat from red to blue....

In Miami-Dade County, home to more than 1 million Cuban-Americans and a voter base that is crucial for Democrats’ hopes of beating President Donald Trump and weakening the Republican hold over state government, the attack ads write themselves....

“If Bernie Sanders is the Democratic nominee, Christmas will have come very early for Miami Republicans,” said David Custin, a political consultant who worked closely with Miami-area House Speaker Jose Oliva, a Republican, on House campaigns during the 2018 midterm elections....

The Democratic Party is now the party of ideas and options. We are welcoming those on the right who feel the Republican Party and Donald Trump have gone too far. We have candidates who are to the left. And we continue to be home to moderates. We will debate these differences in Congress and compromise to get things done for this country. I've been around here for a long time. The supposed "bashing" of Sanders is vetting that needed done back in 2016 when DU was overrun with Bernie Bros trolling and attacking at every turn. He wasn't a viable candidate in 2016 and he isn't one in 2020 for the GE.

Warren, otoh, has been a DU darling for many years, save for a few posters. You'll see most of the long time posters favoring Biden, Buttigieg, Klobuchar, Steyer, Bloomberg, etc would have no qualms campaigning and voting for Warren in the GE. They do have a problem with Sanders and some of his upper echelon of his campaign. They also remember some GOPers stating in 2016 that the hope was that Sanders would get the nomination because they had a playbook ready to kill his campaign. That book still works in 2020.

I believe he will lose and cost us many other Congressional seats if he is the nominee. In my opinion, he will not beat Trump in the states we need to win in the electoral college. I admire your enthusiasm but I am one of those 65+ voters who are very reliable voters. I will vote for Bloomberg before Bernie. It is not that we hate him or his policies. We don't. Realistically and practically we think he will be a disaster because this country is center left...at least in the states we need to win the EC. There has to be a reason why Trump and Russia and the GOP are supporting Sanders and hope he wins. They would prefer that he be the nominee, because they consider him the weakest candidate against the Orange Maggot. However, we are each entitled to our own opinion. We will see how this plays out.

Bernie will not only cost us the election, but will allow Republicans in state legislatures to gerrymander state and federal districts for the next decade after the census. It will also allow Donald and Mitch to pack the federal courts with right wing judges who will stay there until 2050.

Sounds rather premature, not to mention rather authoritarian.

A lot of Democrats, including a lot of Democratic politicians, are worried that a Sanders nomination could do great harm to the party, including costing us the GE and control of the House.

Deal with it.

I don't recall any Sanders supporters here chiding other Sanders supporters or criticizing Sanders surrogates who were saying negative things about a possible Biden nomination. Including the tired "young voters will stay home" line predicting a loss for Biden.

Bernie will not pull a win in my state. Current polls show Biden taking Missouri in the primary. It also shows Biden taking Pennsylvania and Michigan in the primary, two of the most contested states in 2016.

I'd be shocked if Sanders pulls off the nomination. Labor has mostly stayed out of endorsements during the primary season, with only a few members attempting to speak for everyone. I can tell you this as someone who sits on a board and hears things: they don't like Sanders. They view him as not strong enough to pull off the GE. And if Labor is iffy about a campaign, that campaign will lose.

No chance.

Honestly, my candidate won't win MO in the GE. I don't think any except maybe Bloomberg would come close. What I do know is that the state GOP would use Sanders as a smear on all downticket races: Congress, gubernatorial, state offices and lower. I think Galloway would be a fantastic governor and if we can elect Elad Gross as AG it could change not just Missouri but nationwide.

(Gross used to work in the MO AG office. He's now running against a corrupt Republican named Schmidt who was appointed after the equally corrupt Josh Hawley won the Senate. Why Gross is so important is because of the powers as written for what the MO AG can do. The AG can issue orders that cannot be overridden and Gross plans to use it. He has stated Day 1 he's sworn in he will present the order demanding the sources of all political funding used in any Missouri state race. What this means is blowing off the cover of anonymity of all Dark Money entering the state, which offers national raminfications. Other attorneys have looked into Elad's claims and said his plan is feasible and legal. If Sanders gets the nomination Galloway, Gross, Simmons, etc have no chance.)

Isn’t the idea ‘vote blue no matter who’?... if Bernie ends up being the nominee, won’t Democrats wanting to defeat trump vote a straight Democratic ticket as well as casting a vote for President and carry that ‘vote blue no matter who’ winning strategy up and down the ticket? Aren’t the voters the ones who decide ultimately who has coattails? Wouldn’t all of you who dislike Bernie but would vote blue for whoever the candidate is also understand how important it is to vote for Democratic House and Senate candidates in Congress to defeat McConnells stranglehold on legislation and the judiciary? I realize some independents who lean right or left might not and certainly Republicans won’t (and Never Trumpers will certainly not vote for Bernie).... but Democrats? Who exactly is not going to vote a straight Dem ticket? Will Democrats hold their noses for Bernie but not vote for down ballot Dems to spite Bernie and prove he can’t get anything done? That makes no sense. I’m genuinely confused about this theory that if Bernie is the nominee I’ll vote for him but he’ll lose us all those seats in the House and Senate. Are Bernie supporters the ones who won’t vote for the legislative branch Dems? I really don’t think so.

I wasn't assuming that at all. But the average registered Democratic voter still usually votes a straight Democratic ticket in a Presidential election no? My question was in reference to that....what is the likely percentage of people who will vote for Bernie if he's on the ticket, and they either like him or don't but are voting blue no matter who....and then not also voting for down ballot Dems? Most people vote a straight ticket and especially in a Presidential election. Love him or hate him, if Bernie is the nominee, and people are actually pulling the lever for him, even those who don't pay attention the minutiae of politics, I think its likely that they will pull the lever for the rest of the Dem ticket. This Dems in Despair gnashing of teeth thing about Bernie is a bit much. If he gets to be on the ticket....he is the Democratic nominee, like it or not....vote for him and vote for his House and Senate to come along with him so we can attempt to get things done. I won't be happy if Bloomberg is on the ticket but I damn sure would vote for him and for his accompanying Democrats with no question. That is what a real Democrat does.

We lost to Reagan in 1980 because enough Democrats who usually do didn't. And we lost in 2016 because some Democrats who voted for Obama switched to Trump. Consider as well that Massachusetts (home of Warren) and Vermont (home of Sanders) both have Republican Governors.

In 2018, we won the House because of moderate candidates picking up more conservative Democrats and Independents and some Republicans. Putting a self-described Socialist on the ticket risk both the Presidency and down-ticket races.

I still think if people are actually serious about defeating trump, from whatever political grouping they fall under...only Republicans crossing the aisle and Independents who usually lean right will not vote for a straight Dem ticket....because....even if Bernie doesn't make it at the top, we will still need the Senate to stop McConnell....and of course retain the House. This is an existential election, and most people know it, not just Dems on DU. I don't think any past election even comes close in comparison to what's at stake here. There might even be people in non swing states who vote down ballot Dem and leave the Presidential choice off. My Republican mother does this all the time. She left off trump, and voted down ballot Rs in Florida. Swing state voters shouldn't do that of course, but in NJ, NY etc. if people can't stomach voting for the Socialist, I just don't see them not voting for the Senate and House candidates of the party. People are scared of trump of course, but without McConnell to aid and abet him, he'll be curtailed in what he can do regardless if he is still in the Presidency. If we have the House and the Senate we can also impeach Barr and Pompeo....that'll cut trump off at the knees. He still needs McConnell and Barr to complete his plans for MAGAtting America. So my original point....get the word out Vote Blue No Matter Who is even more important in down ballot races.....or not more important but just as important.

Why would people not vote for a moderate Dem in certain Congressional districts just because Bernie is there? The concept of a Moderate is a myth. They aren't actually centrist. Most Moderates are socially and economically liberal.

Now translate that to Bernie Sanders. As indicated, the commercials write themselves.

This state was just starting to come around. Then we got badly outworked and outmaneuvered by the GOP for years. I've provided those anecdotes many times recently. Republican canvassers door to door all year long compared to late pathetic desperate catchup tactics by Democrats only in the final month of each cycle. Totally the opposite of what I experienced in Nevada once Harry Reid fortified that operation. I've been back to Florida since late 2008 yet only Donna Shalala's campaign last year was on the ball in terms of finding me early in the process and staying in touch.

Nothing from Andrew Gillum. Nothing from Bill Nelson. I wish I were exaggerating. That's how inept it is in Florida right now.

So when these insiders are scared they have every reason to be scared. Florida is not in play with Sanders atop the ticket. The Cubans will think it's Venezuela if Sanders wins. That was the fear tactic and comparison last year. It will succeed again. House races we won narrowly like the upset win over Carlos Curbuelo won't be competitive at all.

Don't be stupid enough to care about current polling above big picture logic. Josh Marshall is situationally clueless.
