WaPo Column-Bernie Sanders has emerged as the Donald Trump of the left

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/bernie-sanders-has-emerged-as-the-donald-trump-of-the-left/2019/04/02/66a516f4-5576-11e9-8ef3-fbd41a2ce4d5_story.html?utm_term=.f96d585e8fb2

in politics, as in physics, every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

Hence, Sen. Bernie Sanders’s emergence as the Donald Trump of the left.

Fundraising and polls show that many Democrats think the best answer to an angry old white guy with crazy hair, New York accent and flair for demagoguery is, well, another angry old white guy with crazy hair, New York accent and flair for demagoguery. It’s not difficult to picture a scenario in which Bernie captures the Democratic presidential nomination with the same formula that worked for Trump with Republicans in 2016.

On paper, the independent from Vermont doesn’t make sense: Democrats are a party of youth, and he’s 77; they are majority-female, and he’s a man; they represent the emerging multicultural America, and he is white. Statistically, he is the worst option against Trump: An NBC News poll this week found that there are more voters with concerns about Sanders (58 percent) than there are for former vice president Joe Biden (48 percent), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (53 percent), Sen. Kamala D. Harris or former representative Beto O’Rourke (41?percent each).
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

She can barely contain her excitement at the horrors that await us. All in the name of some fantasy "revolution", she (and others who think like her... you know who they are) believe that their fantasy justifies destroying the Democratic party. Trump relies heavily on attacking his opponent. This tactic is most effective when his opponent is a normal human - with a sense of shame and ability to feel hurt. When you feel vulnerable due to an attack, you make mistakes. And attacking back doesn't work because Trump just doesn't give a crap, or at least acts like he doesn't. Sanders also doesn't give a crap.

What's he going to attack Sanders for?

Not releasing his tax returns? Don't worry, they are coming, where are yours?

Being a socialist? Damn straight I'm a socialist, and we are coming for you!

Bernie has no traction in African American and Latino communities to win the nomination.

African Americans and other minorities, particularly women are the backbone of the Democratic party and Bernie has not been able to make a dent in that.

Bernie's 2016 run has made people angry including many who supported him back then. He has reached his high water mark. he cannot go any higher because his issues are already well-known and many other candidates are championing the same issues.

Both of them do seem a bit more like cult leaders than politicians with supporters.

The op-ed author simply must have overlooked Bernie's pussy-grabbing, ownership of bankrupted casinos, multiple wives and extramarital affairs with porn stars, his insistence on building a southern border wall, and his outsourcing the federal court-packing to the Heritage Institute.

But just as "both parties are the same", the Republicans will be "the party of healthcare", and the noise from wind turbines causes cancer, there will always be someone, somewhere who will read this drivel, nod their head and slowly grin, and post it to their favorite forum.

And not for the purpose of thoughtful discussion.

Of course, Trump trumped Sanders in 2016. No surprise since holding onto his left-wing dissidents wouldn't allow Sanders to use the bigotry of angry populists, from right and left, enough to draw more. Thinking especially of all those bigoted white working class men Democrats Sanders tried for but lost to Trump. The best he could do was avoid being associated with minorities.

But this time Sanders sees new opportunity in trumpster fall-aways who see Trump as a loser, both white populists and moderate Republicans. At the same time he tries to appeal to the center, he has to avoid losing his remnant zealous lefties and also to keep his hand officially extended, but that's all, to resentful minorities who are bad fits for the Democratic Party.

It'll be interesting to watch. I'll probably at least record the "town hall" Fox is putting on for him.
