Originally my favorite was Harris, but today my wife answered a pollster...

...and I was surprised to hear her answers. We are career educators. The wife retires this spring after 41 years of teaching. I expected her to name Warren or Biden as her pick.

She told the pollster,
"I've had it with losing - so even though I love the Democratic field I will vote for Bloomberg in the primary."
The pollster ask her about the different positions of the candidates...and she said,
"I'll vote for my dog if they will get rid of Trump."

Wow! I was surprised. We have not even discussed Bloomberg, but we've talked a lot about Warren, Biden, Klobuchar, and Buttigieg. There are Bloomberg commercials on TV here daily. Sanders is well-known, and Yang is unknown here, but I wonder how many really are beginning to think that Bloomberg is a winner?

At any rate, I also wonder if the majority of voters who simply don't vote will come out for this election. Will TV and FB commercials get them off the couch? My wife thinks like Star Wars..."you're our only hope"! In the face of the rallies, the MF45 coup, and McTurtle's hold on the Senate, she has a point. I don't actually know, but maybe Bloomberg would have cross appeal in Florida.

I looked it up. Bloomberg has more than 60 billion. He can outspend the repubs. Our primary ballots are mail-in. We will hold them as long as possible to see what happens (and who drops out) before posting them.

I have some hearts left, so I'll give out hearts to responses on whether Bloomberg can actually win in your home state. Not national polls, but how does Bloomberg come across in your neck of the woods?

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

"Mike Bloomberg holds 7-point lead on Trump in Michigan, poll shows

WASHINGTON – Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg is running an atypical campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, avoiding the early voting states and instead pouring millions into TV ads and hiring staff in other places.

A new poll indicates it may be working in Michigan.

Bloomberg has opened a 7-point lead in a head-to-head matchup with President Donald Trump in the state, according to a poll released Wednesday by EPIC-MRA of Lansing that shows the former mayor gaining ground with independents, moderates and other key constituencies.

His 49%-42% lead is the largest among all the Democrats, though 9% remain undecided with voting for the Democratic nomination getting underway in Iowa on Feb. 3. Michigan's primary is March 10."

and disingenuous backtracking—and insistence that it brought down the crime rate, which was not the case—-he might not be able to gain the AA and Latino support currently predicted for him.

This article is not some inflammatory denunciation of him. It is written from a policing standpoint in a criminal justice journal, but takes an objective look at the harm to both policing and to citizens the program caused under Bloomberg as well as his stubborn support for it.

Snip————————————————————————-

Why Bloomberg’s ‘Apology’ Perpetuates Misunderstanding of Stop-and-Frisk

Bloomberg had been one of SQF’s most vocal proponents, boasting it had “saved countless lives” even after a federal judge had declared the New York Police Department (NYPD) program unconstitutional.

Last week, however, Bloomberg apologized.

Speaking at a predominantly African-American church in Brooklyn, N.Y., he said, “I can’t change history. However today, I want you to know that I realize back then I was wrong.”

But for what exactly was he apologizing?

Although SQF predated Bloomberg’s election as mayor, the program ratcheted-up under his leadership far beyond its constitutionally sanctioned contours. Stop-and-frisk has a long history as a policing tactic rooted in particularized, reasonable suspicion that a specific individual is involved in criminal activity.

However, in New York and several other U.S. jurisdictions, this tactic morphed into a widespread, aggressive crime-control strategy. With Bloomberg’s unwavering support, NYPD officers routinely stopped, questioned, and often patted-down hundreds of thousands of people each year—roughly 87 percent of whom were African-American or Latinx—to see if they were carrying weapons or drugs.

Mon Feb 10, 2020, 11:07 PM
Feb 2020

I live in Texas, which I don't think any of our candidates can win this cycle (I'm a realist and while we're working very hard to increase turnout, it's a very uphill battle), but I think Bloomberg will likely appeal to a lot of different groups.

We live in a bit of a bubble here on DU, and we can sometimes overlook that a lot of people (maybe even a majority) are somewhat apolitical but still vote, and a lot of people only get interested in voting about the time they head to the voting booth. I think Mike can appeal to those people in part because of the ads and in part because he doesn't come across as a die-hard partisan. While some certainly want that in a primary candidate, it doesn't always sell in the general election. The fact that he's been an independent and flirted with being a Republican for political expediency might actually be a positive for him in the GE.

I also think he would be a strong candidate in the states we absolutely need to win, those six or seven states that will be in play, including the ones that resulted in the narrow EC loss in 2016.

Mike's not in my short list (yet), but he's a pretty solid general election candidate. Might actually be the best option we have, if we really look at it logically. Not the best candidate from a Democratic primary perspective, but the best in the GE.

Most major cities in Florida have a population more than entire mid-western states. The problems and economics of scale for NYC obviously rival a lot of states.

But I hate Trump even more.

Like the man said in the movie - “America is not a Country, it’s a business”. And now, since SCOTUS decisions, gotta go with the flow. America is for sell and Bloomberg is buying. I think that Bloomberg is the man that Trump can never be - and I believe that Bloomberg will beat Trump like a red-headed step-child. And even more, once Trump is defeated, I believe that Bloomberg (or hopefully whomever wins) will do all that he can to ensure that Trump dies in jail. I mean a serious prison, not the Tennis Court prisons that the rich and famous normally attend.

Have pictures of her and Bill when he was president.

I was so hoping that she would win in 2016, and I was floored to discover that women would vote for Trump over her. A good Christian friend of mine voted for Trump (and our friendship was on the ropes for some time after that) because she couldn’t vote for a woman.

I was talking with my wife about this and she was not surprised that a lot of females wouldn’t vote for her. I was floored - Hillary to me was the best qualified person to ever run for POTUS.

Enough, can’t change the past.

I agree with you Harris, Warren and Klobuchar - anyone of them would be a better president than what we have, and I would enthusiastically support any of them.

I'll be very surprised if ANY Democrat wins this state. There are simply too many Magats. If I weren't 80 years old I'd move to a blue state in a heartbeat.

That said, I love Bernie. But I really don't think he can win. Bloomberg has been running TV ads here in very red SW Missouri. I'm beginning to think he may be the only one who can take Trump down. I want to see how he performs in a primary before I decide.

Not sure if they're statewide (I'm near Austin, which is blue but the suburbs vary from lean blue to purple to fairly red), but they've been running in heavy rotation here. Some Steyer ads, as well, but I can't recall any others.

Bloomberg might be running in red states to help turnout for down-ticket races, even if he doesn't think he could win the state at the presidential level. We have some really high-profile Senate and House races upcoming, and we're also trying to make further gains in the state legislature. The ads might be running with all of that in mind. Bloomberg seems to be a big-picture guy.

Whatever the strategy, I'm all for forcing the GOP to be competitive here and spend money.

Feb 2020

Besides the obvious reason ... he's got money out the wazoo to throw around, let me tell you the biggest reason, IMHO ... I don't see this brought up often.

Here it is: the other uber-rich people in the world know he's real deal, unlike grifter Trump. He's like top 15 richest in the world. And self-made.

They will absolutely believe he's going to look out for them at least as well as Trump does. Bloomberg UNDERSTANDS them cause he's legitimately one of them. And an ACTUAL great businessman, and sharp cat.

And if MB is the nominee for the Democrats, they're going to look at their bank accounts and go ... do I REALLY wanna give that shitheel wannabe Trump's PAC a buncha millions? Or should I hold onto my money, let Bloomberg finance himself, and let the chips fall where they may? I'm likely to 'win' either way, so ...

You know how Adelson has said he's going to invest $100M or whatever in the election? But did he say he's directing it to Trump? Guess who else is Jewish and Pro-Israel like Adelson? His fellow multi-billionaire Bloomberg.

You know Trump ain't in good favor with the remaining Koch Bro ... and he might be the richest dude in the world at this point.

There's more to Bloomberg's having a ton of cash than just the advantage provided by his ads ... the Billionaires aren't going to fight him like they would against the rest of our candidates.

Oh, and did I mention ... Bloomberg News?

Under other circumstances, the idea of Bloomberg as our nominee would pretty much suck to me.

BUT ...

And Bloomberg is a true Democrat, I've no reason to doubt that.

He's also given away $8.4B since signing the pledge to give away at least 1/2 his wealth.

And another thing ... you know who else might NOT throw everything he has at the Dem Candidate ... should that person be Bloomberg? Yeah, Putin. Bloomberg's grandfather emigrated here from Russia, funnily enough. And grandma emigrated from Belarus.

Not a damn thing. That's one of the misconceptions I've seen around here, that Bloomberg will spend anyway so it doesn't matter if he's not the nominee.

His money would mean something in low funded House races. It wouldn't help our presidential nominee at all. That race is decided on preference, not turnout. All of these peripheral matters don't mean a flip compared to the basic reference point of our nominee vs. Trump. Money is not going to fix anything if Middle America is scared of something our nominee represents. The decision will already be made long before the campaign commercials are running.

We need to get that idea of Bloomberg's money lifting all boats out of our head. It is pathetic handicapping.

If Trump will consent to a debate, that is.
Trump is an arrogant bully who will pull all the tricks he tried to pull against Hillary against whoever goes up against him in the fall. Bloomberg is a fellow New Yorker. He speaks Trump’s language. As a guy who travels with the same rarefied New York circles as Trump, he knows where all the bodies are buried. He has known who and what Trump is for 40 years. Of course I will vote against Trump, but I have no enthusiasm to knock on doors or GOTV for Bloomberg.

Bloomberg is not the corrupt lunatic that Trump is, but their interests are fundamentally the same. I am really skeptical of Bloomberg's recent, convenient, apology for stop and frisk. I also find it interesting that Bloomberg's people plagiarized parts of his policy proposals (See the Intercept Feb 6, 2020). If he has to steal someone else's work, because he hasn't bothered to consider the policies he wants to implement regarding health care, the economy, infrastructure, LGBTQ equality, gun safety, etc. he has no business running for president.

Frankly, if the election comes down to Trump vs. Bloomberg, I think it will be clear that American democracy is dead.

Democrats had 4 yrs to do away with these bullshit caucus and open primarys. What do they rely on a POS app that can be hacked....your making it easy. Perez is mostly silent as a church mouse. We've had this ridiculous debate system, it almost like everyone gets a trophy on some kids sports team so no feelings are hurt. I haven't watched not one debate nor spent one dime. Its the first I've not maxed out since 2008. I just hang up and thrown the mailings in the garbage. So we will see.

I will pull the blue lever this year regardless, but...

First, to answer your question, my state will not go Blue for anyone. The independents that Bloomberg appeals to are going to be different than the ones Sanders would appeal to here, and neither coalition would win over the devout Trumpsters and the devout Gunsters (who may not like Trump but vote red out of fear). So I can't judge based on others -- not in a swing state.

I know he will be better than Trump, so of course if he gets the nomination I would vote for him.

I'm happy with him and Steyer spending money on ads attacking Trump early.

But I really do hope that he revises his policy (even if he doesn't his opinion) regarding cannabis, particularly medical cannabis. I know I might sound silly for having this as why I'm skeptical of him, but his opinions have been far more strident on the subject, and if red states like mine are passing medical use... he's behind even one of the most bass-acwkwards states in the nation, and that is concerning for me.

I Don't have any idea how Bloomberg plays in California.

I'm for Joe, as you can see, but feel myself increasingly drawn to Amy Klobuchar

And I'm considering it.

Not sure how I feel about that as he would not be my top pick. But not very many people where I live (west Michigan) are going to vote for Sanders. The word "socialist" will always be associated with him, and that scares lots of people. Lots of moderate Democrats too.

People think the fact that he's rich will hurt him but I don't think they understand that wealth has been a large part of Trump's appeal. A lot of people see wealth as a sign of intelligence - which seems astounding with Trump, but they see it as proof that he isn't as dumb as he looks - and people see shouting down wealth and refusing wealth as being impractical, and "impractical" for a lot of people is a synonym for "dumb." As in the "has book smarts but no common sense" kind of dumb.

He has a good chance in the primary IMO. Sanders won last time but the idiot OK Democratic party made a rule change where Independents can vote in our primary. Most Ind. are right wingers in my experience.

In the general election, I doubt he could win but he would be pretty strong.
My only experience is with my never-trumper brother-in-law. He hates Trump and will vote for Bloomberg for sure.

Those voters matter, but far, far more voters decide based on what they see on their TVs. They vote based on the ads, really.

We're a minority when it comes to voting for President. We think about it, look at records and policy statements. Most people can't be bothered with any of that. It's a consumer society. People buy what is advertised the best.

Bloomberg is advertising more and better than any other Democratic candidate. Everyone is seeing Bloomberg ads every day. He's focusing on the broadcast TV network morning, evening, and nighttime news hours. He's been flooding those in Minnestota, a Super Tuesday state for a couple of months already. And it's not the same ad over and over again, like most candidates do. He has literally dozens of ads, and they're all outstandingly well done.

I think he can win in a number of states. The other candidates have not run a single ad in Minnesota. The March 3 primary is exactly three weeks from now. What are they waiting for? They're in for a surprise, I think.

He will definitely lose Nebraska but then anyone with a D next to their name would. I would give him a 50-50 chance of winning the electoral vote from the Omaha district. Obama won it in 2008 but they made sure to gerrymander it even better in 2010 so it won’t be easy.
