Meet Andrew Yang

I’m Andrew Yang, and I’m running for President as a Democrat in 2020 because I fear for the future of our country. New technologies – robots, software, artificial intelligence – have already destroyed more than 4 million US jobs, and in the next 5-10 years, they will eliminate millions more. A third of all American workers are at risk of permanent unemployment. And this time, the jobs will not come back.

I’m not a career politician—I’m an entrepreneur who understands the economy. It’s clear to me, and to many of the nation’s best job creators, that we need to make an unprecedented change, and we need to make it now. But the establishment isn’t willing to take the necessary bold steps. As president, my first priority will be to implement Universal Basic Income for every American adult over the age of 18: $1,000 a month, no strings attached, paid for by a new tax on the companies benefiting most from automation. UBI is just the beginning. A crisis is underway—we have to work together to stop it, or risk losing the heart of our country. The stakes have never been higher.

Once I understood the magnitude of this problem, and that even our most forward-thinking politicians were not going to take the steps necessary to stem the tide, I had no choice but to act. I’m the father of two young boys. I know the country my sons will grow up in is going to be very different than the one I grew up in, and I want to look back at my life knowing I did everything in my power to create the kind of future our children deserve—an America of opportunity, freedom, equality, and abundance.

I urge you to join me. No one else is going to build a better world for us. We’re going to have to do it ourselves. Together.

Humanity First,
Andrew

didn't make the cut. :groan:

His proposal on UBI is interesting, but I don' see how it would ever get passed in Congress.

I do very much like his exceptionally well thought out platform and as to how it passes Congress, something will have to be done sooner or later. It's a matter of getting over the idea that GDP is the end all measurement of our economics and moving to a realization that this country is to be for the benefit of the citizenry.

Wasn't that more of a personal opinion he gave on it? Maybe I'm being too soft on him over it because his sentiments echo mine when it comes to that issue. I dunno, maybe it's just something that he should have stayed quiet on.

But he is a Luddite and wants to use government regulation to directly slow technological advancement. It’s a non-starter. I love having him out there talking about UBI. I’m glad he is running because of that.

I don’t see how that is debatable. It’s a known quantity with him. Some of his regulatory plans would flat out stop technological advances. There is no need for it.

6. REGULATE AI AND OTHER EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES
Wed Apr 3, 2019, 03:11 PM
Apr 2019

Advances in automation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) hold the potential to bring about new levels of prosperity humans have never seen. They also hold the potential to disrupt our economies, ruin lives throughout several generations, and, if experts such as Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk are to be believed, destroy humanity.

Technology is advancing at a pace never before seen in human history, and even those developing it don’t fully understand how it works or what direction it’s taking. Recent advances in machine learning have shown that a computer, given certain directives, can learn tasks much faster than humans thought possible even a year ago. We’re heading into this new world with no idea on how to regulate it, and a regulatory system that’s designed for technology that’s much less sophisticated than what we’re facing in the near future.

Technological innovation shouldn’t be stopped, but it should be monitored and analyzed to make sure we don’t move past a point of no return. This will require cooperation between the government and private industry to ensure that developing technologies can continue to improve our lives without destroying them.

I simply don't see Luddite here, but if you do count me as one as well. What I see is a realization that technology needs to be monitored in order to benefit the people not just some people.

Where he states he would use regulation and tax laws to slow/stop certain aspects of AI and automation.

In talk after talk he discussing ways he will limit technological advances.

I’m really interested in a lot of what he has to say. It’s why I watched so much of him and learned more. I like the guy. I like many of his ideas. His outright fear of AI and automation is a non-starter for me.

That may not be such a bad idea until we can understand just how much and what kind of impact AI and emerging technologies will bring to our world. We are always catching up with tech, medical and other advances, perhaps taking a bit and doing some thinking first and not just letting things get ahead of what we can make to our benefit is such a terribly bad idea.

and I haven't heard much of him wanting to stop or slow AI/automation. Do recall where you hear him mention those plans?

The impression I got is that he's saying it's going to happen and that it should be encouraged because there will be many benefits, but that we need to change how we do things to ensure everyone benefits and that we get our share for what we put into the system.

As I said before, I hope this is a start of a successful political career for him. I don't know how I'd feel about him being president in 2020, but I do hope that he is somehow used by whoever does win the primary (assuming it's not him). He has a lot of appeal to be from all sides of the spectrum because of his non-dumbed down regular folks talk. He talks like a normal person rather than a politician, but not in the backward knuckle dragging way certain others orange buffoons do.
