It seems that, if people have choices available, they don't choose Sanders.

Yes, and in 2016 he got 36 delegates in IA + NH, in 2020 only 21 delegates in IA + NH

Right. The larger field doesn't explain why half his voters didn't stick with him this time.

We always knew that a lot of his 2016 was at least as much a vote against HRC,

Most voters have just now started to pay attention. Till now low-information voters knew Bernie,

It seems that 34% difference is comprised of the ABC group - Anybody But Clinton.

so yeah, he benefited from being the Hillary alternative. Still, today, where voters have many options, it seems more Dem voters are liking Sanders than are liking anyone else.
