Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumTwo thoughts on New Hampshire.
1) Any thoughts why Bernie didn't get a larger percentage? I know it's split by lots of people unlike 2016, but doesn't that indicate more people want a moderate this year?
2) Turnout looks to be really good. NYT is reporting over 269,000 with 84% of the vote in. The highest turnout for either party ever in New Hampshire was 2008 Dems with 287, 556. It's looking like this year might surpass that.

A primary beats the hell out of sitting around for hours just to vote.

(8,379 posts)I think Bernie has been campaigning for so long there is no way for people to maintain their enthusiasm for him.

(10,721 posts)1) Too many false assumptions being made. Many supporters of moderate candidates have Sanders as their 2nd choice (outside of DU, that is).
2) I don't know where people on DU are getting the idea that turnout has been bad. Turnout is typically greater in years when both parties are in a nominating process (i.e., there's no incumbent president). Yet Iowa turnout was a little higher this year than 4 years ago, and tonight's turnout in NH is - as you said - possibly record-breaking.

(374 posts)Somebody on the TV said they tightened up residency rules since '16 so fewer college students can choose to vote in these early states, at least last minute.
I don't know how true that is though, or how big an impact it would be.
