Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumThe showing Warren had in Iowa and NH should sadden us all
Clearly she isn't my candidate, and my candidate was likely helped to some extent by her demise, but I am still sad to see this happen because of much of the why it happened. Warren gave us detailed plans. Warren's numbers added up. Even on things where I disagreed with her (parts of her financing of health care for example) it was refreshing that she wasn't relying on unicorn dust to fund her plans. And, sadly, that is what did her in. That should disturb us all. If candidates who level with us, pay for things, and actually tell us what they intend to do and how they intend to do it are punished for it, then we will get people making empty promises with no real intention of keeping them. You get what you reward. Sadly, the electorate rewarded unicorn dust. Sanders has been campaigning on Medicare for all for decades yet when asked about funding says "we have no idea what it will cost". On free tuition it is "fewer people might go to college". And that was rewarded over I have a plan for that. That should sadden us all.

(50,949 posts)the votes because of reasons and we'll be assured those reasons have NOTHING whatsoever to so with her vagina! Nothing! How dare that suggestion be made.
But....
Hopefully we can get her into a really meaningful cabinet position where she can get more done anyway.

(5,376 posts)These attributes, interestingly, are more associated with Republican voters than Democratic ones. So Iowa and New Hampshire voters in their Democratic caucus/primary are more likely to be whiter, older, and comprised of more noncollege whites than primary voters in other states, as was the case in the 2016 presidential primaries.

(62,406 posts)Her showing in Iowa was not all that bad, 3rd place a few percent behind Bernie. But the media disappeared her. They continually talked about "3 tickets out of Iowa" and gave those to Pete, Bernie and ... Biden, barely even mentioning Warren's name.
Then she was disappeared from Friday's debate as the media fawned over Klobuchar.
Those of us who were Dean fans un 2004 remember this was the same treatment that Dean got. When Dean was mentioned his "scream" was always played.
Both Dean and Warren made the fatal error of saying they wanted to hold corporations to some standards.

What is an utter mystery to me is that why people are talking about Bloomberg when we have to PERFECTLY fine Democratic women in the race in Warren and Klobuchar.
If Bernie gives you indigestion and you feel Biden isn't going to make it , then throw all your support to Warren/Klobuchar who have earned the respect through decades of work within the Democratic party and not some johnny come lately Republican billionairre who suddenly found a conscious and is repenting for his racial legacy.
All these Bloomberg lovers need to explain whats wrong with Warren / Klobuchar first.

(16,090 posts)suggesting that corporations should be held to standards. I think that it was also that she mentioned enforcing anti-trust laws.
But, there are plenty of candidates who don't care what corporations do and to whom corruption is just something to brush off and say "meh" about.
I've given up hope for any positive change happening.
I'll vote and work for anyone but Trump, but I've realized that our media will never allow change that helps human people...but the stock market will do well and "corporate persons" will flourish.

(15,366 posts)There are too many here who are supporters of other candidates or who are "undecided" who are trying to torpedo her candidacy, which is still in its early stages, despite the endless debates and the torture we put our candidates - and ourselves - through.
Also there are many here on DU who seem to be "newbies" who are dissing Warren with every post. Shades of 2016 with HRC.
I'm with Warren throughout the primaries, no matter what.
I've never been a "fad" voter. When I choose a candidate, it is because I believe that candidate is the best person for the job.
The usual caveat: if Warren is NOT the nominee, I will support whoever is.
I always have supported the Dem candidate ... and I always will.

Given the circus in the US, I am getting quite fond of the Swiss system for choosing their President, however. In the first place, no corrupt dolt can ever be elected - there's too much vetting for parliamentarians at the local levels and then the parliamentarians who are elected have to vote for the federal cabinet, so one has to be a real team player.
But it would take a complete overhaul of our political system and our Constitution to have a parliamentary democracy, which only truly works if there are more than two viable political parties. I don't see it happening in my remaining lifetime, if ever.
Anyway, for info, here's how the Swiss system works: https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/presidential-explainer_switzerland-s-19-living-ex-presidents-a-political-record/43308498
.
Compared with other countries, becoming president in Switzerland is relatively easy. In a nutshell, get elected to cabinet by parliament and wait your turn. This will come when all the cabinet ministers who were elected before you have served as president during your time in the cabinet, i.e. a maximum of six years.
Quirky fact: any Swiss citizen over 18 who reckons they are minister material can put themselves forward for nomination to the cabinet. Parliament can even pick someone who hasnt put themselves forward (hence regular jokey campaigns for Roger Federer to be catapulted into office), but in almost all cases parliamentarians have been chosen.
Every December, parliament elects one of the seven cabinet ministers to be president, although its actually just a question of sticking to the order of seniority and confirming the vice-president (current veep Simonetta Sommaruga will take over from Maurer on January 1).
...
But as long as parliament keeps re-electing you as a cabinet minister every four years (the odds are good: only four ministers have not been re-elected since 1848), theres no limit on how long you can stay in the cabinet or how many times you can be president (the record is six). In practice, however, few ministers nowadays serve a third term as president the last to do so was Kurt Furgler in 1985. ...

(43,132 posts)But in my view she is professorial, a policy wonk, and her ideas reflect liberal academia in Massachusetts which has fallen very much from favor in the last 30 years. Someone wrote a book, was it Kevin Phillips - two basic ideologies underlie almost all candidates, Massachusetts and Texas, and when one gets in trouble politics is passed off to the other one. We're not holding a winning hand right now.

(20,709 posts)Anyone thinking M4A can't be paid for is being willfully blind. Lots of countries all over the world are paying for it, and they have lower costs and better healthcare outcomes.
Bernie is in fact being the most truthful on health and other issues. He's right that nobody knows exactly how much healthcare will cost over 10 years, either with the status quo, or with M4A. What we do know is that, either way, the American people are paying that amount of money, and with M4A it will be less. The problem isn't lack of spreadsheets, it's lack of political will. If we take on the big corporate interests and win, we can have M4A, and free college, and the rest of the progressive agenda.

(115,674 posts)that raised taxes significantly on middle- or working-class people (who pay much higher taxes in Denmark), people would be gathering on the Capitol steps with torches and pitchforks and that person's political career would be over. Tax increases are the kiss of death in this country. Politicians get elected by promising to cut taxes, not by promising to raise them.

(14,565 posts)I saw it in my Las Vegas living room for years when I hosted the debate watching parties. They would get up and go to the bathroom. They would excuse themselves to make a call on their cell phone.
It is even more pronounced among women. Hillary lost the debates to Trump. They weren't score that way but if you look at exit polls and voters who said they decided based on the debates, Trump had the edge.
I wasn't surprised at all. Trump was using short sound bytes. He was promising jobs to middle America. Obviously he was lying about everything but he was doing so in conversational fashion and not issues and numbers that voters don't care about at all.
Impression not details.
