Democratic Primaries

Serious question.
How poorly can Pete do in SC and still be viable?
It's only fair to ask since people are saying Biden is done after Iowa and New Hampshire.

(5,376 posts)That was exactly the point I was trying to make.
Warren is in third place in total delegates at this point, ahead of both Biden and Klobuchar, yet people have been saying that she is the candidate that "needs to" drop out.

(18,402 posts)Its delegates you obtain. The nomination is reached by obtaining 1,990 delegates.
I dont understand why people dont get the difference between party primaries and general elections.
Buttigieg is now minutely ahead in delegates. That probably wont last for long. But right now, he had the right to claim a win in Iowa, since he won the most delegates there. (Claiming you won because you had more votes on a first alignment, as Sanders did, was the incorrect thing). And Buttigieg did not claim to win New Hampshire. But he did win an equal number of delegates there.
Rules are rules (and vary from state to state), and whether you like them or not, you cant just ignore them.

(7,947 posts)I don't think a poor showing in SC will mean much, as it's expected. Super Tuesday will be the big event. Everyone should hang on until then.
I think there might be some consolidation -- to one progressive, two moderates maybe by then.

(115,683 posts)These are dumb questions. What will happen in any campaign will depend on things that aren't reliably predictable, especially in an election as weird as this one. How much money do they have? How much influence will Bloomberg have? Will they say or do something unexpected that either harms or helps them? Will Trump do something that either harms or helps them? Will an external event have an influence? Typically candidates drop out when they run out of money and don't see that more is coming in, or some previously-undiscovered misdeed is discovered about them. John Edwards abruptly dropped out in late January, ostensibly because he was running out of money, but his affair was about to be revealed as well. Then there was Gary Hart, who was the front-runner in 1988 until his affair was discovered. Stuff can happen. Asking questions about when/if a candidate will drop out is pretty pointless and just irritates their supporters.

(5,376 posts)I posted the OP to make just that point.
Even though she is in third place in total delegates, people, many people, have been posting that she "needs to" drop out.
One poster even went so far to say he thought she might suspend her campaign today. (Glares in the general direction of Brooklynite lol)

(94,520 posts)..about Warren, based on her poor performance and early concession speech.
The point about SC is: with Super Tuesday only three days later, your investments have already been made; there's no incentive to drop out at that point.

(5,376 posts)Warren's speech was realistic but she appeared more than determined to press on.
Warren has plenty of money to campaign thru Super Tuesday.
As she should.
But... I knew my "trap" about Pete would lure you in. lol
So we should expect your admission of being wrong first thing tomorrow morning then? When Warren is still in the race?
Joking. But there is a serious point underlying the joke.
Best regards, and On to Nevada!
