Mnuchin and Blankfein say Bernie Sanders would 'ruin' U.S. economy

David Lawder, Heather Timmons
3 MIN READ

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former Goldman Sachs head Lloyd Blankfein and U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin both said that Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders would destroy the U.S. economy if he wins.

Blankfein, who was the chairman of Wall Street bank Goldman Sachs (GS.N) during the financial crisis, tweeted the criticism about Sanders as the U.S. senator from Vermont led the New Hampshire primary Tuesday night.

“Sanders is just as polarizing as Trump AND he’ll ruin our economy and doesn’t care about our military,” Blankfein wrote. He also alleged that Russia would be supporting Sanders.

Goldman, which Blankfein, a registered Democrat, led for 12 years, played a key role here in the subprime mortgage market collapse that caused the Great Recession.

Bernie’s not even my top choice in the primaries, but every time these rich assholes who have plundered this country starts whining about how awful Bernie is, I just think “Damn. He’s doing something right” (Actually, a lot right, but I love that he gets under their skin)

THIS 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻

This country, thanks to treasonous fat ass, and his party of putin, currently has us Trillions of dollars in debt after 3 years of being installed into the Oval Office, and THAT'S okay?

As of December 31, 2018, debt held by the public was $16.1 trillion and intragovernmental holdings were $5.87 trillion, for a total of $21.97 trillion. Debt held by the public was approximately 77% of GDP in 2017, ranked 43rd highest out of 207 countries.

Actually, he'd be able to do very little. I knew that in 2016 and I voted for him anyway because I liked his vision.

I feel differently now - I underestimated America, sadly. I just want Trump out, and I don't think Bernie can win.

But he wouldn't be able to ruin the economy because he couldn't do all he wants to do.

Of course, the stupid Republicans have handed the office of the presidency so much power that he'd be able to do a lot more than before their idiot in chief was put in office.

11. Question for Sanders supporters
Wed Feb 12, 2020, 10:32 PM
Feb 2020

First I want to make it clear that I am not trying to start something. I am just trying to understand. How exactly would his health care proposals effect people working in the health insurance industry? They employ a lot of people. Wouldn't the Sanders and Warren plans eliminate their jobs?

The perception from many of us older folks is that a government run health insurance program for all would decimate a segment of our economy by putting a lot of people out of work. Those of us who are hesitant to buy into 100% government run health care do so not out of callousness for those who don't have insurance, but rather for concerns that trying to solve the problem that way would result in negative unintended consequences. It feels as though the proposal helps a lot of people at the expense of employees who work in a specific industry.

Buttegieg's Medicare For All Who Want It idea alleviates the worries that I have because it appears to help everyone get health insurance and access to health care without taking a blowtorch to the people who currently work in health insurance. If I am mistaken on this, I would really like to have it politely explained to me.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Those in the INSURANCE industry will have to look elsewhere, big difference. Not unlike happened in the tobacco industry, or what will happen in the fossil fuel industry. I have absolutely no problem with that if it means more folks have the coverage they need at reduced costs.

Hence, the corollary of your question could be, "So you're ok with stagnation?"

(i.e., both questions are fallacies in that the answer to a given question presupposes a prior answer to a prior question)

...that if Trump is reelected he's also gonna destroy the US economy. But unlike Sanders, Trump is going to do it so his friends can buy the shrapnel for two cents a pound.

And so, if "won't destroy the US Economy" is your main criterion for choosing a candidate, you'd be best off with either Biden, Buttigieg, Bloomberg or Klobuchar.
