Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumTomorrow I will vote for Mike with 7 of my buddies
30 days ago we had diffent candidates we supported. From Warren to Biden to Pete. Last night we, with 1100 diverse Nashvillians , watched Mike Bloomberg take it to Trump in Nashville. We are all life long Democrats that work in politics at some level. 4 white and 3 black but friends for 20 years. We saw a man who can take it to Trump. We saw a man, who unlike the rest of the field, will self finance and destroy Trump and GOP. Yes, he's not our favorite on issues but we need a damn bully to take on this bully. Trump and the GOP will swamp the rest with relentless media and a massive money advantage. . We concluded that 2020 is different. Mike is the guy Trump fears. We are all in. Mike Bloomberg will defeat Donald Trump and humiliate him.in the process.

(8,052 posts)I don't think his heart's in it, either. My biggest worry is that he gets a second wind, somehow manages to win the nomination, and then in Sept. or Oct. he does something that makes him look confused or out of it. That could happen to Bernie or Bloomberg, too, but I feel Biden is the most prone to having something bad happen and the GOP mocking would be relentless. He should have run in 2016.

(68,556 posts)win will drop out...it will be either Bloomberg or Biden...vs Sanders. Remember Mike is in super Tuesday...so we shall see where we are headed then. If Biden wins, He is my guy but if he falters...then Mike as Sanders can't win a general.

(1,086 posts)What happens when he folds his business interests into his trust and directs it into his Reelection campaign and his Super Pac.
We now have the direct marriage of money and power that would be as dangerous and what we have right now.
I trust Mike, to an extent, but that much power is to easy to be unchecked.

(25,470 posts)He can already spend whatever he wants.
Besides, he joined the organization started by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, committing to give his fortune away. He's already donated $6.5 billion and plans to donate more over the next few years, so I'm not sure that's much of a concern.
"We now have the direct marriage of money and power"
We already have that in PACs and Super PACs. Even Sanders has ones associated with him. At least in Bloomberg's case, we know where the money is coming from.

(92,187 posts)convention with the most delegates, because while Sanders has not demonstrated he can move beyond his base, his base will stick with him while the other candidates will split the votes between themselves, making the odds that Sanders will have the most delegates going into the Convention, and thus get the nomination
Bloomberg also isnt running in all the states, including SC, and the states he is running in will only hurt Biden, Amy, and Pete

(5,225 posts)We really don't know much about Bloomberg and his ideas for governing. Meanwhile we have several good candidates knocking themselves out to help us know about who they are and what they will do. I have enough faith in the American electorate to believe a superior candidate will emerge, and will be elected! AND we will know that he/she wants done for this country.

(761 posts)The only people that can afford to use money to get their way is the top 1%. The only people that can afford to buy a President are billionaires. I have worked for millionaires and maybe billionaires for the last 40 years. What I do know is that they get their way. One that I know pretty well, call him rich guy, told me about a mechanic that worked for him. A guy that I knew also. The rich guy told me that the mechanic worked hard all his life but kept getting knocked down by unfortunate circumstances. Rich guy told me that the mechanic always worked hard and did more than was expected. Rich guy told me that the mechanic was never going to have to worry again. I had known that rich guy for some time and knew that he was sincere and honest and meant what he said. And he did it privately. He could have made up some event acknowledging and rewarding the mechanic but he didnt. So I know it is possible for a super rich guy to be aware of the plight of poor people and act upon it. Mike strikes me as that type of guy.

(36,295 posts)We knew that Trump inherited his money and wasn't a self-made man.
We knew that Trump declared bankruptcy several times.
We knew that Trump was using his charity as a personal piggy bank
We knew that Trump had to go overseas to get funding as US banks considered him to be too high of a risk.
Bloomberg is none of the above.
