(1,253 posts)In 1947, when the Haganah was already in armed conflict with Arab forces, Greenspun shipped machine guns and airplane parts to that organization (which later became the core of the Israel Defense Forces). This was a violation of the U.S. Neutrality Acts, a crime for which Greenspun was arrested and ultimately convicted on July 10, 1950. He was fined $10,000 but received no prison time.
As a young man, Greenspun became closely involved with Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel and the work he was doing to reopen his Flamingo casino. Greenspun worked as the Flamingos's publicity agent.
He also wrote articles accusing McCarthy of being a homosexual, an act that brought Greenspun considerable criticism, even among McCarthy foes. Greenspun became further entrenched in domestic politics when allegations were made that he held blackmail information against prominent Democratic presidential nominees.
On June 17, 1972, Virgilio González, Bernard Barker, James W. McCord, Jr., Eugenio Martínez and Frank Sturgis were arrested while placing electronic devices in the Democratic Party campaign offices in an apartment block called Watergate, in Washington, D.C. It later emerged that people working for President Richard Nixon wanted to wiretap the conversations of Larry O'Brien, chairman of the Democratic National Committee. The Watergate Scandal developed from this incident, leading to wide-ranging investigations, Congressional hearings, and steady media coverage for the next two years.
On May 23, 1973, McCord admitted that this group (known as the "Plumbers" had been involved in several covert activities. This included a plot to steal documents from Hank Greenspun's safe. McCord testified that Attorney General John N. Mitchell had told him that Greenspun had in his possession blackmail type information involving a Democratic candidate for president. As Greenspun was an avowed Republican, it was assumed that Greenspun would use his political influence and connections to sway the election.[citation needed]

(1,253 posts)Politico contacted every American paper known to have endorsed the Republican candidate. Apart from the St. Joseph News-Press, they are the Santa Barbara News-Press, the Waxahachie Daily Light in a suburb of Dallas, the Times-Gazette in Hillsboro, Ohio, and most recently, the Sheldon Adelson-owned Las Vegas Review-Journal, the only major newspaper in the nation to come out for Trump. On Sunday, the Antelope Valley Press, a small family-owned daily newspaper in Palmdale, California, with a circulation of about 20,000, also published an endorsement of Trump, albeit with no accompanying explanation.

Sun lawyers argue that the dispute around the JOA a structure created under the federal Newspaper Preservation Act, which was approved by Congress and signed into law in the 1970s includes matters of the public good. The act provides limited antitrust protections for newspapers to combine business functions while remaining editorially independent.

(1,253 posts)The Review-Journal has a joint operating agreement with The Greenspun Corporation-owned Las Vegas Sun, which runs through 2040. In 2005, the Sun ceased afternoon publication and began distribution as a section of the Review-Journal. On March 18, 2015, the sale of the newspaper's parent company, Stephens Media LLC, to New Media Investment Group was completed.[4] In December 2015, casino magnate Sheldon Adelson purchased the newspaper for $140 million via News + Media Capital Group LLC,[5] although a subsidiary of New Media Investment Group, GateHouse Media, was retained to manage the newspaper. $140 million was considered a steep price amounting to a 69% gain for New Media Investment Group after owning the newspaper for nine months.[6][7]

(35 posts)Newspapers in major cities often combine under JOAs. In Detroit we have that arrangement with Detroit News and Detroit Free Press. In their joint Sunday publication, they have separate editorial pages.Detroit News is typically pro-GOP while Free Press takes a liberal stance and overall supports Democrats.

(92 posts)Is the way it tries to make the point that Sanders has the same characteristics as Trump, just with a liberal worldview. This serves to normalize Trump, while also glossing over the depths of Trump's depravity. There may be some similar characteristics, but Trump is an absolute monster. Anyone trying to position Sanders as the liberal counterpart to Trump is doing a huge diservice to our party. I don't think anyone believes that Sanders is capable of the malevolence that Trump thrives on. ANY of our candidates would be light years better, Sanders included. To insinuate that they are similar might as well be Russian propoganda as it only serves the GOP. Trump is NOT normal; we should resist anything that normalizes him.

(1,253 posts)Call me a skeptic then...birds of a feather and all that. Then look at the article itself, framing Sanders as essentially the same as Trump. If you think that's in any way a fair and objective characterization of Sanders, I've got a dam outside Vegas you might be interested in purchasing. This is a hack job hit piece, straight out of Adelson's playbook. Nothing less. You should be ashamed to share such filth on a Democratic board. If I, or anyone else referred to any Democratic candidate as the "left wing Trump", the post would be immediately removed, and possibly our further posting rights.

(7,543 posts)The liberal Sun would no longer exist without the operating agreement with the Review Journal which preceded Adelson's ownership by decades. Adelson would have put the sun out of business by now if not for the court-mandated operating agreement. Adelson and the Review Journal are now in court trying to void the agreement.
Operating agreements like this are common in a world dominated by Hearst papers and are the only reason many smaller liberal papers still exist.

(33,545 posts)The problem with some very old white men - and I'm speaking as a member of that demographic which I share with the orange shitler in the White House and with Senator Sanders - is that their minds have ossified and they lack creativity in their thinking; many of us - not all of us but certainly many of us - have rusty steel trap minds that cannot be opened since they rusted shut.
These two old white men, albeit on different ends of the political spectrum, one a Nazi and one something else, are examples of the same.
