Please, enough with the pearl clutching

I rarely post here but I can’t stomach any more of these ‘If Bernie wins all is lost’ threads. Back your horse and stop throwing mud on the rest of the field. Let the people vote. We’re going to win.

I’m 61, so it’s not my first rodeo. I’m what is known in America as ‘the far left’. In other words I’d like to see America advance to where the rest of the industrialized world arrived in the middle of the last century.

You have to live in a place where healthcare is a tool for extracting wealth, where the criminal justice system is a profitable way to create slave labor while disenfranchising minorities, where elections are a system of institutionalized graft and where public policy is sold to the highest bidder without regard for the common good or for future consequences, to believe what I want, what Bernie is proposing, is somehow radical.

Turning our election finance system into a bottomless money pit was a stroke of evil genius for conservatives. They have made winning elections dependent on the one thing they have an absolute advantage in: Money. And if you want to know why MBNBC hates Bernie, there is your answer. Campaign finance reform will cost the media dearly, while making elections about ideas and policies rather than who is selling themselves to whom..

Trump is going to lose to whomever is the democratic candidate. He lost the popular vote in 2016 and he hasn’t made a friend since. Not one. He’s pissed off the farmers, the truckers, the coal miners, the military, you name it. For a lot of people he was a protest vote that they now regret. He’s going to go down in flames.

So let’s take advantage of the situation and stand for something for once. Forty years of being milktoast republican lite has seen the democratic party, and in turn the country wither and rot. Trump himself is a manifestation of the loss of our moral compass.

So stop the pearl clutching and stand for something for a change. Let’s see if we can’t finally claw our way into the middle of the 20th century. Give people something to get excited about. The promise of a better life, and it will be.
If I were to vote in a presidential

It's the fault of the conservatives who devised an ingenious way to subjugate the Democratic party by creating a campaign finance system which would force Democrats to compromise their values in order to raise enough money to compete in a system where they would never be competitive. And it's been working like a charm.

And going to the far left likely wont accomplish that. Like it or not, trump, even being the trashcan that he is, is still the "known quantity" to many voters. They may say "oh i think he's awful. I'm saying I'm tired of being told by people who have no way of knowing that Bernie can't win, while he's winning. And being told that by a guy whose candidate is posting fourth place finishes. I'm being told Bernie can't win by a guy whose candidate, in their last national bid finished 6th behind Dennis Kucinich and just ahead of 'no particular preference'. That guy doesn't have a crystal ball. Neither do I, neither do you. So what I am suggesting at long last is that he should back his candidate and let others do the same and stop with the 'yours can't win' nonsense because he doesn't know.

Some people make their choices early on, like me, because their beliefs match the beliefs of their candidate. My candidate has espoused the same beliefs for 40 years, beliefs which no 'serious' Democratic contenders has espoused since 1992. It makes my choice easy. A candidate who believes what I believe and who isn't taking campaign contributions from health insurance companies, drug companies, hedge fund managers, or hospital corporations, or any other corporations/billionaires.

Your choice is much more difficult, because you are choosing between multiple candidates who oppose all of the above and think corporations are at least as important as real people. It's much harder for you to choose between Hickenlooper, Bennett, Bloomberg, Biden, Hoyer, Buttigeug, Klochubar, and others who are dedicated to not rocking the boat, than it is for me to choose Sanders, and who think Warren would be a good President as well.

Here's hoping you figure it out before November!

Its still in the hands of the Electoral Collage.. and last time they handed the Presidency to Donald Trump. The Popular vote didn't count for spit. Its almost like the US government allows us to vote, however, its always going to be the Electoral Collage that makes the final decision, so how is it really in our hands? I don't get it.

I will vote for whoever we nominate, but unless the Electoral Collage is good with our candidate what's to prevent them from picking Trump again??? ???

Fear of 4 more years of Trump and fear of a new way forward with Bernie. Most democrats/Indep that have been polled agree with health care as a human right, 15.00 p/hr Federal Wage increase, Attacking Climate Change and getting MONEY out of political campaigns and Lobbying. now to help make sure that Bernie wins the nomination because they see him as the weakest

“The electorate... vote[s] against their own self-interests...”

I call them the IOA, the Idiots of America.

You get the government you deserve.

We the people have the power to seat a progressive, forward-looking, fair and egalitarian government. But we’re made up of geniuses who say things like, “Obama’s a Muslim, right?” and “He’s gay?! I want to take my vote back!”

Unfortunately, doing so would be manipulated to disenfranchise too many people. But sometimes I think people should have to pass a basic test on government and current events in order to vote. Too many members of the IOA make it into the voting booth. If only we could weed them out. We just might eliminate or at least significantly reverse the voting against one’s own self interests syndrome.

People preached that Trump would NEVER get elected and they excoriated anyone as a “concern troll” for expressing their fears that the pudding smelled a bit off.

The US is currently under attack from within by Republicans working closely with Putin as he attacks America from the outside. Trump is still in the White House instead of in jail, and I just saw yet another post saying Trump was finally gonna get his comeuppance for the recent illegal termination of Vidman and/or for interfering in the Stone prosecution. Where such optimism comes from is truly a wonder to me.

As for those of us who have repeatedly witnessed Republicans taking giant dumps on the Constitution, please allow us a bit of pearl clutching. The last time we put our pearls down someone else used them to choke us. So long as the teeth gnashing and hand wringing inspires people to get out and fight, so be it.

But through most of the mountains it didn't work too well. Thankfully Im not doing that anymore

What did work literally everywhere was some combination of terrestrial radio Conservative talk, country music, christian, or Spanish language stations, With the occasional christian country spanish stations

And last I checked I found a number of conservative talk stations, along with one "liberal" station that seemed to veer wildly between scattered or in lock step talking points, not the intelegent conversations I was looking for. And a couple news stations with a more neutral or international POV

Id be curious if the culture or the radio and other influences are the chicken or the egg. Ive not been around long enough to know.. Were the early truckers conservative? Or when did that start to be a thing?

This country has careened so far to the right, that common sense from the 1970's is now radical. Nixon proposed a national health care plan in 1974. NIXON for Pete's sake. https://khn.org/news/nixon-proposal

Now, on a website that ostensibly is left-wing, even suggesting single-payer is frequently derided as a utopian fantasy, despite every other advanced country in the world showing how it can be done in any number of different ways.

Who here loves their health insurance? I HATE mine. It costs thousands of dollars in premiums, and has a $3,000 deductible before you get reimbursed for anything. I have 2 co-workers in my 10 person office who have had claims rejected, one for a procedure which was PRE-APPROVED by the insurance company (eventually they paid after MONTHS of denying it) and another who has spent over a year fighting his denial of coverage when he had emergency surgery for a bowel obstruction, and 2 of the surgeons involved weren't in his health care plan. EMERGENCY SURGERY. Like he was supposed to be calling around making sure everyone in the OR was on his provider list when he's unconscious.

And then there are hospitals, who charge $50 for a $.05 aspirin, or who charge $1000 for a procedure if you have a particular brand of insurance, but $10,000 if you have NO insurance. And drug companies, who arrange deals with health insurers to overcharge their customers for drugs, then give kickbacks to the insurers, unbeknownst to the patient. Or who charge Americans 10 times more for insulin than Canadians pay,

A two-party system where BOTH parties get most of their funding from corporations is a recipe for disaster, and for the last 30+ years, it's what we've had. This ain't my first rodeo either, but frankly, I'm tired of rodeos where both candidates decry socialism with equal vigor, despite the fact that the two most popular government programs in America, Social Security and Medicare, are socialist.

Trump is an unstable idiot. Dumbest and most incompetent person ever to inhabit the White House. His personality is basically a combination of a drunken frat boy with a spoiled rotten middle school girl. He's a friend to dictators and a enemy of democracies. He wants to help the rich at the expense of the poor. He bans people fleeing oppression from immigrating to American and helps corrupts plutocrats buy their way in. Anyone who would even THINK of not voting for Sanders or Warren if they are the eventual nominee, frankly doesn't have America's best interests at heart.

We've slid so far to the right that was a mainstream republican policy in the 1950s in now seen as far left. It's just insane. Due to cheating the system. And cheating the system is something that there has been far too little enforcement against so here we are, with a senate that of course continues to fight funding for election infrastructure security.

I will say I’m confident that Sanders wins Michigan. It was very narrowly lost, partly due to voter disenfranchisement, particularly in Detroit, and partly due to something I can’t discuss in this forum except to say Michiganders like Sanders.

If our party had paid more attention to what Sanders has been saying for decades, and started moving in that direction we’d be in far better shape now... it’s as if we’re standing here flat footed and asking what the heck happened. What happened is we didn’t pay attention to what he was warning against and now we have citizens united which is making the election as well as social progress treacherous. Now you can say sure, hindsight’s 20/20, but I say at least put.your.damned.glasses.on.now.

Moderate candidates have equal opportunity to run a stellar race and win the nomination, as does Sanders. Meanwhile, the hand wringing over Sanders tells a lot about our unwillingness to consider bold, structural solutions or even call out the obvious tilting of the system towards the 1%.

Better government has to be earned, and the Sanders camp is bringing a lot of voices together to strive for a sea change in politics. Our collective pessimism about truly transformative solutions is a sad thing to see. Maybe 2020 is when that changes!

It is NOT a sure thing that Trump will lose. Far from it.

We CANNOT afford to front a candidate who will piss off the rest of the country. Do you honestly believe that after witnessing the backlash to 8 years of the first black President that this country will put into office an openly gay man? A man whom the Right believes is a Communist? A woman? You are DREAMING.

I won't go further into the why's as I've already posted about that in other threads, but suffice it to say I've learned the win at all costs mindset can lead one down the wrong path and foster some pretty ugly blind spots. Primary season is nuts.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

96. Healthy debate

I’m sick of the posts, mostly on Facebook, that say we need to stop attacking each other’s candidates and vote blue no matter who.

But now is the time for a healthy debate on all the candidates. Civil criticism is fine. Petty attacks, not so much.

Posts of substance most appreciated. You don’t like my candidate? Tell me why. And add a bit on why yours is better.

Too many shut down any criticism like it’s a personal attack.

Before the 2016 presidential election, I was telling fellow democrats it was going to be a close race. I was told not to worry because women were going to vote overwhelmingly against Trump. Then, 53% of white women voted for Trump. When I pointed out that here in the Lehigh Valley, PA, I was seeing a large number of Trump yard signs and bumper stickers, and very few Hillary signs... I was told don't worry, Hillary will win PA. Trump flipped Northampton county from blue to red, and PA too.

"Trump is going to lose to whomever is the Democratic candidate." I have no such confidence.

I'm again already seeing Trump signs and even flags. We Dems might not need to clutch our pearls, but we do have plenty to worry about.

primary today, I would vote for:

good to hear from another "far left" person.

I too would like to see our nation advance to where the rest of the industrialized world arrived in the middle of the last century!

I doubt he's gained many supporters over the last couple of years and he's working to alienate even more every day. We win if we vote.

The Democrats would be insane to run Sanders with this hanging over his head.

I am a Democrat. I have supported our candidates for decades. I do not believe that they are Republicans.

I’ve been begging them to join the 20th century. You know - things like computerized record keeping.

Surprisingly nobody has pointed out that we’re in the 21st.
