My wife is voting for Bloomberg

It’s a house divided, but she admires “putting his own money down” to get rid of Trump. To be honest, I can’t argue with her.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Bloomberg has a huge race relations problem waiting to be exploited by the Republicans.

It's a time bomb that will explode on Bloomberg, and we do not want that to take down our 2020 chances with him.

I have said this before, and I mean it, I would vote for Joe Biden in a heartbeat over Bloomberg.

We're both staunch Democrats, which helps keep things pretty calm when it comes to politics. We talk about the 2020 election, too. I support Biden. She has switched to Bloomberg. When it comes to individual decisions about such things, each of us makes up our own mind.

I understand her switch to Bloomberg. She understands my support for Biden. Either of us will be happy if either of them wins.

We work together. We live together. We make decisions that affect both of us together. However, we are two individual people, and some decisions are made by us as individuals. We both respect each other's independence. We have been doing that for 29 years.

She'll vote for Biden if he's the nominee. I'll vote for Bloomberg is he's the nominee. We will both vote for the Democratic nominee, whoever he or she turns out to be. We both hope the nominee isn't Bernie Sanders, though, because we're hoping for a Democratic win in November, and neither of us thinks that Bernie can win against Trump.

Our relationship is built on respect for each other's individual points of view and decisions. We don't argue about politics. We're both Democrats.

So you have backed off this comment it seems. Good.

Communication in a marriage is important.

Spouses make suggestions to each other about issues that affect them all the time.

There is a big difference between spouses making suggestions about something important and to "argue".

Honestly, these comments came across as perhaps too sweeping and facile.

You are incorrect. It is not my place to suggest how my wife should vote. That is not how our relationship works at all. We talk about candidates all the time. However, when she decided to switch to Bloomberg, she went to the opening of his campaign headquarters here in St. Paul, MN and came home with a yard sign from his campaign. The ground is frozen here, so you can't install a yard sign. So, I suggested she stand it in the living room in front of our picture window. It's very visible from the street.

She makes up her own mind about things like that. I don't suggest that she change her mind. That would be saying that she isn't capable of making such decisions, and I would never say or think such a thing.

I'd put a Biden yard sign next to hers if I had one, but I don't. There's nobody handing those out here. The Bloomberg office had hundreds of them and was handing them out to anyone who would take one. So, our house has a Bloomberg sign. I don't usually put out signs during primary elections, anyhow.

We don't suggest to each other the support of political candidates. We talk about politics all the time, but each of us decided independently on who we support.

So, no, I am not "backing off" what I said. Not one bit. My relationship with my wife is personal, not political. We act independently when it comes to politics and our work. We don't always agree completely on such things. We have a terrific relationship, I think.

Please do not make assumptions about what I write here. You will be wrong more often than you will be right.

But that is still backing off your first comment.

We talk about politics all the time, but each of us decided independently on who we support.

is a completely different type of comment than your previous statement:

I don't suggest how she should decide anything

Saying I don't suggest how she should decide anything was both sweeping and facile and you have been backing off of that comment ever since I pointed that out.

"I don't suggest how she should decide anything" is not how any marriage I know of actually works. Every marriage depends on good communication between partners and spouses make suggestion to each other, even over politics, all the time.

I think I have made this point clearly. You have simply made a broad and sweeping statement that you are now trying to explain away. Namely:

I don't suggest how she should decide anything.

Thanks for the discussion and I hope you enjoy your day.

Bloomberg has a ticking time bomb racial issue that will explode on him when exploited by the Republicans.

If people are worried about Joe, support Amy Klobuchar. I am not telling you all to support a progressive.

But Bloomberg, for all his billions, will end up a disaster because of Stop and Frisk.

Well, I don't want to go on about this, but I felt I should try and warn Biden supporters from a different perspective.

Bloomberg is completely unvetted on the national stage.

Amy Klobuchar or even Pete Buttigieg are more tested.

I tried to do the right thing here and point out how explosive Bloomberg's race relations baggage is, but too many people want to laugh it off.

Polls shift back and forth everyday, but when African Americans across the nation hear about Stop and Frisk, they will not be supporting him in any significant numbers. If Bloomberg is our nominee, many of them will not show up to vote. Stop and Frisk is THAT bad.

People should Google Charles M. Blow, a black NY Times reporter that lived thru it and see what he has to say if they don't trust me.

Again, Good luck to you and your candidate in Nevada.

I hope he does well enough to stop his supporters from flocking to Bloomberg.

Our discussion is probably moot since Bloomberg will be in the upcoming debates, and no doubt difficult questions will be asked, but it will also give him a chance to introduce himself.

I also understand he is the firewall for a lot of folks concerned that there are too many candidates in the race with similar views taking votes away from each other, and that will result in a weak and vulnerable candidate as our nominee, and Bloomberg can prevent that from occurring.

I don't know the answer to that question, because I can see it both ways. In one respect Bloomberg can split the votes where no one comes out dominate, and that would propel a weak candidate as our nominee, or in another respect Bloomberg can take over that division, and becoming a dominate player.

I think the Nevada and South Carolina primaries will give us a good idea about that before Super Tuesday

Fri Feb 14, 2020, 12:10 PM
Feb 2020

There appears to be a lot you don't understand. People are explaining the reasons for their decisions, but you don't seem to be reading carefully.

A lot of people have one singular goal in 2020. That is to win in November. There is no candidate who doesn't have some negative things in his or her record. You've locked onto one of Bloomberg's negatives, but he's managing to counter that pretty will in his public statements. You seem to think that the thing you're mentioning would keep people from voting for him, but he has the support of some African American leaders already.

You don't need to warn us. We can think for ourselves. Really we can. I don't know you. I don't know how good your judgment is, and won't ever know that. I look at other factors than the ones you raise.

That's why I'm still supporting Joe Biden. If he falters in upcoming primaries, I will switch my support to the candidate I believe has the strongest chance of winning. The one thing I'm sure of is that it won't be the candidate you support. I think his chance of being Trump approaches zero, and I've explained why I think that in this forum.

Your statement can be countered by the fact that Bloomberg is not just self financing his own campaign but is also donating millions to down ticket Dem candidates. Something the rest of the candidates are unable to do.

Bloomberg has the money to put out anti-Trump ads at places like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter which Trump had dominated in 2016. Bloomberg is spending a million a day just on Facebook ads.

Bloomberg doesn't need any financial help from the DNC so all that money can be targeted on House and Senate races.

Bloomberg doesn't have to spend a minute fund raising. Something all the other candidates have to do quite a bit. Thus Bloomberg and his campaign can spend all their time attacking Trump.

Bloomberg has the resources and business smarts to set up campaign offices in every state and territory. Putting Trump on the defensive everywhere.
