As concerns grow, Nevada Democrats clarify how their caucuses will work

In response to growing concern that the Nevada caucuses will falter like those in Iowa, the Nevada State Democratic Party announced Thursday that it will use a Web-based calculator designed to complete caucus math and report results on an iPad.

Precinct chairs will receive preconfigured iPads, purchased by the party, and will access the calculator through a “secure Google web form,” the state party said in a memo to presidential campaigns. Results will be transmitted through a secure hotline and verified either through the online calculator or with paper reporting sheets.

Caucuses will take place Feb. 22 at 252 locations across Nevada, with about 90,000 people expected to participate. Early voting begins this Saturday.

The new tool was introduced more than a week after Nevada Democrats abandoned plans to use a pair of apps developed by Shadow, the political technology firm behind the vote-recording app that caused chaos in Iowa during its caucuses last week. The state party is calling its new tool a “Caucus Calculator,” dispensing with “app” after the Iowa debacle.

So a state with twice the population (3MM vs 1.35MM) has 1/3 the number of people voting (90k in Nevada expected vs 300k actual in NH). Almost 600k voted for HRC in Nevada in 2016.

This is absurd.

And running it on a Saturday, when the casinos and hotels are full, so that the workers that we want voting will not be able to.

So, basically, 5/6 of the potential Democratic voters have no voice in selecting the candidates.

I really hope that 2024 sees an end to this archaic practice.
