That's the fatal flaw of open primaries.

NH has a strange way of dealing with it and it is a system where such a thing as suggested in the tweet can happen. Whether it did or not is something I have yet to see proof of, but that's a possibility.

Why is that?

It has to do with the ability of Independents to declare party affiliation in order to vote in the primaries. And they can, as you may have seen if you were watching copious amounts of coverage, change to either party prior to voting at the polls, vote, and then undeclare before they leave the polling facility.

A large portion of the voters in NH are purposely declared Independents and choose at the polls during primaries. NH has an interesting voting culture, you have to live there to get it. I have not seen such a thing in any other state.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

6. How some conservatives are working to disrupt the South Carolina Democratic primary
Thu Feb 13, 2020, 11:18 PM
Feb 2020

Columbia, S.C.(CNN) Some conservatives in South Carolina want to disrupt the state's upcoming Democratic primary and inject chaos into the race for the nomination.

How? By getting Republicans to vote in the Democratic primary.

"You know I guess you could call it meddling," said Christopher Sullivan, one of the organizers of the Conservative Defense Fund in South Carolina. "I would love to see the Democrats -- whoever wins the South Carolina Democrat primary -- for everybody else to have accused him of having stolen the election because he was actually elected with Republican support and therefore prolonged the chaos and the disruption."

In South Carolina, Republicans aren't holding their own presidential primary this year. The state's open primary rules allow for eligible voters to cast ballots in the Democratic contest even if they are registered Republicans. That gives GOP voters a chance to play spoiler in the Democratic contest that is shaping up to be a do-or-die moment for former Vice President Joe Biden and his campaign.

Conservatives in the state have been rallying against the open primary system for years. They say in the past, Democratic voters have cast ballots in GOP primaries and skewed the results of state races to elect more moderate Republicans. Stacy Shea, one of the organizers encouraging GOP voters to turn out and upset the Democratic contest, has collected thick stacks of postcards from Republican voters pledging to support registration by party and "stop canceling out my vote."

My father lives in Mississippi and so he registers as a Republican so he can vote in the primary for the least toxic candidate who might actually enter office. In the general he votes D, but with rare exceptions those candidates never stand a chance. This is just the other guys doing the same thing to us, and there's really no way to stop it.

Except about half of them voted for the most toxic Republican candidate, thinking that the sensible Republicans (and others) would then vote for the Democrat. If one was even running. So it was a wash, and I talked myself hoarse trying to convince them that they'd be better off registered as Democrats and let the Republicans worry about their own.

Once consequence of registering as your father does, is that it makes the potential Democratic voters look so small that often no Democrat is running for office in a given slot. And so the Republican wins by default.

See if you can convince him to become a proud registered Democrat. And maybe even run for office himself.
