Bloomberg's counterattacks may just resonate with Democrats

OPINION — I was struck by a Mike Bloomberg tweet responding to President Donald Trump Thursday morning.

Trump tweeted: “Mini Mike is a 5’4” mass of dead energy who does not want to be on the debate stage with these professional politicians. No boxes please. He hates crazy Bernie and will, with enough money, possibly stop him. Bernie’s people will go nuts!”

To which Bloomberg responded: “We know many of the same people in NY. Behind your back they laugh at you & call you a carnival barking clown. They know you inherited a fortune & squandered it with stupid deals and incompetence. I have the record & the resources to defeat you. And I will.”

Bloomberg adviser Tim O’Brien had his own response to the president’s attack on the former New York mayor: “Translation: I’m a gelatinous pile of greed and revenge fueled by low-boil resentments, burning insecurities, an empty wallet, and constant reminders to myself that my dad was self-made while I was born with a silver foot in my mouth. Where’s my cheeseburger?”

The Trump tweet is nothing out of the ordinary, but the responses were.

Democrats have been bemoaning Trump’s language and style for years now, complaining that he is vulgar, crude and undignified. He is all those things, of course. But hand-wringing about checks and balances, the power of an unbridled executive, the independence of the judiciary, the Founding Fathers and the role of the attorney general is one thing. Taking on Trump by calling him a fool, a liar, a fraud and an uneducated clown who failed in business is entirely something else.

He reminds Trump of his father. Both actually were self made, whereas Trump inherited and squandered a fortune.

Bloomberg is the ultimate New York insider, the very thing Trump's always wanted to be, but New York mocked and derided him.

All that historical and psychological baggage is in play now.

It's like if you're a big talker about how popular you were in high school, but you go to your 20th high school reunion and the person who was really popular and successful in high school humiliates you in front of everyone.

Can you imagine how that would feel?

That's how Trump feels.

He's basically doing what many here have been calling for from Democrats for some time now, so it's kind of ironic that some of those same people seem to be most adamantly opposing him now.

As I've said repeatedly, he's not on my list of favorites. But I think he's a net-positive up and down the ticket, even if he's not the nominee. Maybe especially if he's not the nominee.

He's able to hit Trump in a way no other candidate, no matter how well-intentioned, can do.

Even if they don't want his money, he could still help down ballot candidates and land impeccable psychological blows against this president.

Especially Congressional races in swing districts and with state legislatures, similar to 2018, on a larger scale.

At the end of the day, we still have to win if we want to set the agenda and start reversing the damage.

8. IMO Bloomberg's trolling of rump is what resonates with frustrated democrats because
Fri Feb 14, 2020, 10:45 AM
Feb 2020

they'd like to see their candidate stand up and troll rump the way Bloomberg is doing. The trolling enables voters to feel connected to their candidate because the candidate is standing up and saying things to rump that other D's aren't doing (to the extent Bloomberg is doing it.) I don't think our D candidates are doing a good job at trolling but I bet their numbers would go up if they did on a continuing basis. Yes, they need to talk to voters about health care, etc., but you need to get their attention and trolling seems to be the thing that gets and keeps their attention.

I wish I could say that is awful, but know full well a blustering, ignorant, lying bully needs to be hit back.

Yeah, Bloomberg!

As Harry Truman said,” I don’t give them hell, they just think I do!”

BTW, Harry was short, too. Any tall man knows never to go after a short woman! He will regret it, big time!
