Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumA skeptical party warms to a party-switching billionaire New Yorker
It seems likely that former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg was aware of this shift when he announced his own candidacy in November. A billionaire who had only recently joined the party and was viewed skeptically by the establishment suddenly thinks he can win over Democratic primary voters? Well, yes, I guess I can see that happening.
When Quinnipiac University asked voters how they felt about Bloomberg in December, he was barely above water with members of the party whose nomination he sought. By which I mean his net favorability was only slightly positive; only a bit more Democrats viewed him favorably than unfavorably. Just past the Iowa caucuses, though, the shift has been made: Hes now viewed more positively on net than Trump was by Republicans in Quinnipiacs polling between his own announcement and the caucuses four years ago.
Whats more, Bloomberg is also more favorably viewed overall than Trump was (by about 14 points on net) and is more favorably viewed by Republicans than Trump was by Democrats.
More important, Bloombergs net favorability is now much closer to the leading Democrats still in the race. He still trails them, but his spike from December to February is obvious. Thats a function of his gaining more in favorability (jumping from 31 percent to 58 percent) and less because of a significant drop in his unfavorability.

(8,052 posts)I think politically-minded Dems (at least here) are committed heart and soul to their favorite candidates, and see him as one more obstacle their guy or gal has to clear. They resent Bloomberg's background and his money, and pay no heed to his current proposals and positions, however Democratic-boilerplate they are. Average voters (less political) who are not tethered to a candidate or position are more receptive, going by his poll numbers going up. Weird to see the disconnect. Sort of like the GOP with Trump in 2015.

(25,183 posts)Bloomie's negatives have only just started showing up. Yes, his ads are anti-Trump, and that's helped his popularity, but once Democratic voters learn more about who Michael Bloomberg really is, they'll sour on him.

He is literally the embodiment of everything many progressives, including myself, have fought against our entire adult lives.
A billionaire oligarch with an abysmal civil rights record who endorsed Dumbya Bush, one of the most evil and incompetent presidents we've ever had to suffer as a nation, TWICE.
Sorry, but my conscience will not allow me to forget or forgive this man's atrocious past simply because he bought a (D) next to his name and is spreading mucho $$$ around to replace Trump.
Our goal as a party shouldn't be to simply replace cyanide with strychnine. Our goal should be to win back the WH standing on our core values as Democrats of tolerance, diversity and justice for all. We need to help this divided nation of ours heal.
This isn't the way to do that....
