Mike Bloomberg has faced allegations of sexist, profane comments for decades

Now, as Bloomberg is increasingly viewed as a viable Democratic candidate for president and the #MeToo era has raised the profile of workplace harassment, he is finding that his efforts to prevent disclosure are clashing against demands that he release former employees and complainants from their nondisclosure agreements.

The allegations that he tolerated a hostile office culture could undercut his ability to criticize President Trump’s alleged sexual misconduct and efforts to keep such claims private.

Bloomberg should let those women speak now. What is he afraid of?

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

His support for gay marriage and his participation in "Mayors for the Freedom to Marry" which pioneered legalization of gay marriage.

His initiatives to reduce domestic violence and increase the arrests and convictions for domestic crimes.

His opposition to the death penalty.

His banning of smoking in bars and restaurants in NYC.

His outspoken comments on the idiocy of Creationism.

His work to end the use of coal.

His position that we need to reduce military spending.

His work toward a path for citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

His commitment to separation of church and state.

In my perfect world, he would not be the candidate. I don't like him much. But this is not a perfect world. Far from it. He has done a lot wrong. But he has done a lot right. And he is the only one running the kind of campaign that is needed to defeat Filthy Donnie.

39. The scale of civil rights violations that ocurred against African-Americans and other POC under
Sat Feb 15, 2020, 12:23 PM
Feb 2020

Stop-and-Frisk was enormous. It was a policy he staunchly defended for twelve years as mayor. TWELVE. Even when a federal judge declared Stop-and-Frisk to be unconstitutional he continued to defend the policy. That's not some "poor decision" he made in passing, or some minor, ill-conceived, momentary lapse in judgement, or some distant, hazy piece of tomfoolery from his schoolboy days. That's TWELVE years, all within the past twenty, that he perpetuated, supported and defended the wholesale civil rights abuse of mostly young POC in the city he was supposed to serve.

To me, that's unforgivable, and not something from his past that can be whitewashed with a recently purchased (D) next to his name and a few harsh words for Trump.

BTW - didn’t Sanders switch to I because he couldn’t win running as a D in Vermont? Doesn’t Sanders only slap a D next to his name when he runs for POTUS?

I was not a fan of Mike as mayor (I lived in NYC during the Koch and Dinkins years), but I have been favorably impressed with what he has done since, like providing major funding to Ds in 2018 (you can thank Mike in large part for the blue wave). And Mike has committed to spending his own $ to defeat tRump whether he is the candidate or not. Will Sanders ask Bloomberg to please stop spending his own money to help Sanders defeat tRump if he’s the nominee? I doubt it.

Sanders
He won re-election three times, defeating Democratic and Republican contenders.

Caused voter turnout to double during his tenure.

Burlington became the first city in the country to fund community-trust housing under Sanders’ leadership.

He not only balanced the city budget, but undertook ambitious downtown revitalization projects. He even helped bring in a minor-league baseball team to the town, the Vermont Reds.

He sued the town’s local cable franchise and won reduced rates for customers.

Kept a developer from turning important waterfront property into condominiums, hotels, and offices to be used only by the wealthy and affluent. Instead, it was made into housing, parks, and public space. Even today, the area still has many parks and miles of public beach and bike baths, including a science center.

Provided new firms with seed funding, and helped businesses create trade associations. He funded training programs to give women access to nontraditional jobs and even gave special attention to women wanting to become entrepreneurs.

Voted as one of America’s best mayors by U.S. News & World Report in 1987.

Bloomberg

Spent $75 million, then $78 million and then more than $100 million to win his 3 terms.

Stop and frisk

Union buster

Increased homelessness

Disgraceful eviction of Occupy Wall Street and defied court order to allow protestors back

Slams minimum wage hikes

His New Housing Marketplace program built more apartments for people who make more than $100,000 a year than for people who make less than $30,000. It defines as “affordable” a one-room apartment in Harlem that costs almost $1,500 a month

In Bloomberg’s 12 years in office, his personal fortune increased sevenfold, from $4.5 to $32 billion, while 46 percent of the city’s residents now live in or near poverty.

And so much more.

but being racist and sexist should be absolutely reprehensible and inexcusable under any and all circumstances. Whataboutism doesn't cut it here. Just because the reTHugs choose a gargoyle to lead their party doesn't mean we should do the same.

We need to be better than this. Being sexist and racist is not who we are as Democrats or what we support.

If we really aren't any better than this, what the fuck are we as Democrats? What do we stand for? If we nominate a racist and sexist on par with the one we're trying to oust from the WH, we certainly can no longer claim with a straight face that we're the party that unconditionally opposes both, can we??

So what's our new pitch if Bloomberg is our nomination: "Vote the straight Democratic ticket. Now 25% less racist and sexist than our competitors".

I share those principles. I also think that Daffy Duck could beat Donald Trump in 2020. Daffy knows what the American people know, and it's a message that, I think, the American people are prepared to deliver to the Great Pumpkin later this year:

Thus, I am not terribly concerned about Michael Bloomberg's "weaknesses."

I think for good reason.

was known decades ago, before he served as Mayor. I figured he was part of the raunchy, sexist workplace culture up through the nineties and beyond. What mitigates it somewhat, to me, is that he never seemed to have a problem promoting women and apparently was always pro-choice. Also, he raised two daughters to adulthood who are apparently good people. So, again a mixed bag, still not enough to make me refuse to support him if Amy can't go forward.

except the parts where he did so much better than most.
tho there was a sexist corporate culture, i have yet to hear anything about his own behavior that upsets me much. smart ass comments, yeah. assaults? no. sexual misconduct? no.
but many women in high places, and however reluctant, accommodation for new moms. i keep thinking about stephanie ruhle. she has a lot of good things to say about working for him.

likewise unions. the police climate in nyc sounds just about like chicago's. ritchie daley didnt love the police union here, either. not real big on the teachers union either. both sectors had a lot of problems that the unions werent dealing w. bad cops and bad teachers hanging on for years, or given golden parachutes. those things are always contentious, and go to court, and the city takes the opposite stance to the union, and that's how laws work.

and take my word for it, if i was rich, powerful and single, i'd be getting laid at every opportunity. till i hear from some former partners that he was a shit, i'm not going to equate having a lot of sex w being a bad person.

my ears are open. but i havent heard anything yet that puts him on a different plane than most white old men.

background than someone who's been building a political career for most of their lives. He's also old. Men in their 70's have been sexist (such as it is now defined) most of their lives without even probably realizing it. My Dad is 78, this pretty much defines him. He's a good guy and was always respectful to women, but if you took his jokes and posted them online, they would look...not good
So I'm more concerned about actions and especially future plans than I am about past mouthing-off behavior.

105. When I was young, I would have jumped in bed with a woman
Sat Feb 15, 2020, 06:01 PM

that aroused me in a heartbeat, if she was not married or dating a friend or relative. Times were vastly different then, men that bedded lots of women and didn't make a mess of it were looked up to, sad but true. And even women of that era (80s, early 90s were not like today, I am honest here, I had women that I had no sexual interest in ask whether I was gay because I didn't want to sleep with them), were different. Anyone who lived in a college dorm during that time know what those places were like, workplaces were not much better.

Maybe some men that came of age when I did behaved differently, I will tell you that I never came upon such men. What disgusts me is men that were almost certainly engaging any desirable woman that gave them an eye are setting themselves off as saints now and criticizing the Bloomberg of 40 years ago like they were saints then. I honestly don't care how many women Bloomberg bedded if it all was consensual, I honestly have better things to get upset about, hopefully he remembers some of his better encounters with fondness today, like I do.

I think you are right. We are in a new political era. Our candidates are all trying to win the nomination. Traditionally, they have done so by pointing out how they are "better" than our other candidates. We may be witnessing the demise of this model.

Interesting. Thank you.

85. Exactly. His total focus on Tramp, and hard hitting approach with it
Sat Feb 15, 2020, 01:40 PM
Feb 2020

is exactly the ONLY thing that has won me over to him.

It was what I loved about Joe early on as well. Last Summer he was all about going only after trump and ignoring the shit being flung his way by his primary opponent. He was polling very high then. Correlate his decline in polls to his responding and counter attacking, they trend pretty evenly.

At least in the primary season, I'm behind the person who will go hard and viciously after Tramp. I refuse to be side tracked by any shit dug up by his primary opponents.

As long as Bloomberg keeps that laser focus going, and the other candidates keep on focusing more on each other.. Bloombers my choice.

Bloomberg 2020..

Y'all, he is what he is and....OH YEA! He's got a ton of $$$ that will buy him voters. The sharp marketing, branding, soundbytes from his his campaign MACHINE will all have far more impact than any sound discussion. So we can discuss all this stuff from the past, but it won't compete w short attention spans and savvy soundbytes. I may be wrong, but I just don't think most people out there are interested in any vetting process.

It's why there are work place harassment laws. Verbal harassment matters and is actionable.

And skeletons in their closet. Even Uncle Bernie. Basically what's happening is Democrats are disqualifying every single candidate that's been running since 2019. That's around 2 dozen people that we decided along with the media that weren't perfect or "electable" enough to be President.

My point is that if Democrats don't stop with the circular firing squad we are going to get our asses kicked in November.
