Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhat Sanders actually said: "Being pro-choice is an absolutely essential part of being a Democrat"
People can agree or disagree with that, but at least let's get the quote straight.

Because that makes sense.

(68,546 posts)where Sanders did not vote with us... And no matter how you try to spin it, Sanders has rejected the Democratic Party using it in Vermont to get elected and then reverting back to being an independent after the election...when you reject the party, you send a message that it is not good enough...add that to the constant criticism of the party by Sanders...and I believe he drives away people who might otherwise become members.

(68,546 posts)when he campaigned for Heath Mello and Tom Perriello both pro-life Democrats who had sponsored and/or voted against legislation that took away abortion rights. Mello in the Nebraska legislature and Perriello in the House...he voted for the Stupak amendment which caused a loss of protection for abortion rights in the final ACA bill. We were treated to a finger wagging lecture from Sanders about this...so that is why people are kind of put out about his complete reversal...some might say convenient reversal. I say we welcome pro-life but our party is for pro-choice in our platform...so you abstain on bills having to do with abortion or you vote with us...neither Mello nor Perriello did this. You can be pro-life and pro-choice...believing that abortion is a bad thing but that a woman has the right to make that choice...neither Mello nor Perriello...and Sanders endorsed and campaigned for both supported a woman's right to choose and both actively worked to deny such a right...in fact the fear in VA was that if Perriello got in,he would side with the legislature on this matter.

(20,709 posts)He supported them against Republicans, not over fellow Dems.
What's funny is that all the people who attacked Bernie for the Mello endorsement (and not Tom Perez, who also endorsed Mello), then turned around and also attacked Bernie for supporting a pro-choice primary challenge to the anti-choice Dem Henry Cuellar.
Which just goes to show that these attacks on Bernie aren't based on any kind of principle.

(68,546 posts)First of all, I don't give to shits who is the mayor in some city in Nebraska...slap in the face to women to campaign for a guy that sponsored anti-choice legislation and passed it...he actively took rights away from women. Perriello signed the Stupak amendment so I would not have campaigned for him either...nor supported him. He hurt the ACA in terms of a woman's right to choose. Now Sanders is suddenly all in for pro-choice. Really.

(20,709 posts)Bernie's always been strongly pro-choice, but he also recognizes that we need to win elections against Republicans. He's always been like that. It's his critics that change their tune.
Like when they attacking him for supporting a pro-choice primary challenge to a pro-life Dem. The same people. It's silly.

(1,474 posts)There are a large number of people who oppose abortion but who affirm and understand that life in a secular society means that we must accommodate religious difference. And opposition to abortion is a religious dogma. Enforcing it with the power of the government is wrong. If we lived in a theocratic state, then pro-life people would legitimately be able to control reproduction. But we do not.
