(2,706 posts)Ocasio-Cortez, who endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary, claimed that reports that her party is conspiring to deny the Vermont independent the nomination are overblown, but warned Democrats against using super delegate or other kind of subversive policies to deny anybody the nomination.
Super delegates cannot vote on the first ballot. When they vote on the second ballot, their votes arent subversive.

(2,657 posts)bothers a lot of people. Superdelegates were not created to hurt candidates. They were created to, among other things, make sure that the eventual nominee does not stray from the overall goals of the party. The reason that so many superdelegates are current Democratic officeholders is based on one straightforward assumption: if you are a current Democratic officeholder, you obviously know what it takes to win office. Superdelegates were designed to make sure that the Democrats who best understand how to win pick someone else who knows how to win.
The Democratic Party has had the candidate with the most votes in 6 of the last 7 elections. It is only the ridiculous electoral college that has prevented Democrats from holding the Presidency 6 out of the last seven times. To me, this means that the Democratic Party's system of electing Presidents, while it may require adjustment, does not necessarily require a revolution or a complete abrogation of current policies.

(26 posts)I love this woman, she is the embodiment of everything we should stand for as the Democratic Party.
But my question for the centrists that dislike her and Bernie etc:
Just how much should we give up to compromise in the name of pragmatism?
First we are told that we must compromise on policies for us to defeat trump.
Then we are told that we must compromise on big donor money for us to defeat trump.
Now we are being told that we must compromise on a history of racism and sexism when it comes to Bloomberg to defeat trump.
Just how must we compromise in the name of pragmatism to get rid of that shit stain in the oval now?
Why is it as Democrats we always are told we must compromise our beliefs and our values while the conservatives fight tooth and nail for theirs?

(2,706 posts)For example, Amy is a strong progressive. The fact that you think the rest of the party needs to compromise with the 10% of the far left policy positions is the problem.

Kamala Harris is more liberal (ACU voting score of 4.55), pretty close to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, with an ACU voting record of 4.41. Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar has a 4.70 lifetime score, according to the ACU. Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts senator, came in at 4.16 for her lifetime, with a 2018 score of 9 (very near Biden). Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, ironically, is more conservative than any of these senators, with an ACU score of 6.78.
Her lifetime rating on progressive votes is over 90%.

(38,687 posts)The Green New Deal and Our Manic Pixie Dream Politics
'But Manic Pixie Dream Politics is not politics where you think for yourself, its politics where you give yourself over to the idea that itll all work out in the end if you believe in what doesnt quite make sense to you.
AOC and her plan just seem, to some people, like the answer. The way she presents herself means she must be the way forward, never mind the details. But heres the thing: Thinking someone who looks and acts like AOC must be the solution to how to govern is like thinking someone who looks like Mitt Romney or some other old, white, grey haired guy looks presidential. Its the same impulse to outsource analysis about policy to aesthetic preferences.'

Ocasio-Cortez to Constituents on Bolivian Coup: Drop Dead
'The result? As we say in Queens, bubkes.'
'Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the celebrity who moonlights as my Congressional representative, has repeatedly claimed to speak for ordinary people, but she refuses listen to them, even if they are constituents.
In late November, shortly after the US-backed military coup that unseated the legitimate president of Bolivia, I together with my life companion requested a meeting with Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, whose local offices are located just a short walk from our Jackson Heights apartment building. Working on behalf of a group of anti-imperialists opposing the fascist junta, we hoped to persuade her of the need to act quickly to thwart the coup and defend the lives and rights of the Bolivian people.
Although we never got past the reception desk, we were permitted to present a petition signed by leading academics and anti-imperialist organizers on behalf of the people of Bolivia. We provided all personal data and contact info requested by the office. We were promised that we would be contacted promptly to discuss scheduling a meeting.
We were not contacted. For weeks. After pressing the issue, always taking care to remain courteous and respectful of process, we were subjected to a galling and contemptuous bureaucratic runaround that sometimes felt like applying to and being rejected by an exclusive private school.'
