Crossover voting could create political mischief in Michigan's March 10 primary ....🙄😲

Every four years, the presidential primary provides a chance for electoral shenanigans.
Because Michigan voters don’t have to register as members of the Republican Party or Democratic Party to be eligible to vote in primaries, they can cross over and cast a ballot for a person they probably would never dream of voting for in the November election.
It’s a well-worn tradition in Michigan politics and a way to give your preferred candidate the best chance to win in November: The Trumpiest of President Donald Trump's supporters, for example, might cross over and vote for Democrat Bernie Sanders or Tulsi Gabbard because they think that person would have the worst chance of defeating Trump in the fall

Or a so-called Bernie bro or "Yang Gang" member might cross over to vote for Republican Bill Weld or Joe Walsh to send a message that there could be a dent in Trump’s base

In addition, even though voters don’t have to publicly declare themselves as Republicans or Democrats, they will have to ask for a ballot for one of the parties in the presidential primary. And that choice will be a matter of public record

We are going to keep losing our elections if we keep having open primary

Lots of people from the opposing party cross over in primaries when there is an incumbent running from their side.

There is always the concern over crossover sabotage, but that can sometimes backfire.

In 2010, the primary for Michigan Governor had only one viable D candidate and a whole field of R candidates. There appeared to be a lot of crossover from Dems into the R primary.

A surprise candidate, Rick Snyder, with no previous government experience won over several better known R politicians. I believe
that it was Democratic voters that assumed that a "no name" just had to be better than the others that allowed him to win the primary. Unfortunately he won easily in the General Election and enacted many damaging policies during his two terms.

Not so sure that wasnt one of the factors that led to Trump getting the nomination in 2016.

From the link

"Mark Grebner, a Democrat and founder of Practical Political Consulting in East Lansing, crossed over and voted for Trump in 2016 thinking he’d never win the nomination or the general election and would fare the worst against Democrat Hillary Clinton."
