Bloomberg Senior Advisor Tim O'Brien on AM Joy

He did a good job of explaining and defending Bloomberg’s record AND his record since leaving the office of mayor while freely admitting that some actions - like stop n frisk - were egregiously wrong.

I give him credit for appearing this am as Joy has made it clear that she is virulently anti-Bloomberg. The appearance certainly didn’t erase any standing questions, but at least (IMHO) it opened up an avenue for further discussion.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

His response to the ADA questions were bad. And just like the Harris adviser who appeared last year said about her, he insisted Bloomberg was the “only” one who could beat Trump. Even as he was being laughed at during the absurdity of his claim.

https://www.politico.com/states/new-york/city-hall/story/2013/12/under-pressure-bloomberg-shifts-on-taxi-accessibility-029514

Unlike in London, where every taxi can accommodate wheelchairs, only 232 of New York's more than 13,000 taxis are accessible.

Not so long ago, Bloomberg didn't find that problematic, particularly in light of a since-beefed-up city program that dispatches accessible taxis to wheelchair users who request them.

“I think one thing that is clear is people in wheelchairs can’t go out into traffic and try to flag down a cab,” he said in 2011. “It just starts to get dangerous."

Medhi’s statement that neither he nor Tim have XYZ political baggage in their past (as does Mike) was effectively countered by Tim pointing out the one would think obvious fact that neither he nor Medhi were politicians who served as Mayor of NYC for 13 years, or a public figure who ran a multi-billion dollar company that employs tens of thousands of people accounts for them not having Bloomberg-level political baggage.

I felt a bit embarrassed that Medhi went for such a lame false equivalency. He usually does better. I’ve never seen Medhi go for the “uh-oh” sip of water during a back-n-forth until today, while Tim was offering his counter.

BTW - when Tim referenced this week’s Quinnipiac poll showing that Mike beats tRump by the widest margin of all D candidates, Medhi scoffed under his breath “that’s simply not true.” Is Medhi not aware of that poll, or was he trying to muddy the very clear waters exposed in that Q poll?

https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/bloomberg-suit-add-handicapped-accessible-cabs-unfair-average-riders-wastes-gas-money-article-1.965033

Mayor Bloomberg Wednesday brushed off the feds' effort to make more cabs handicapped-accessible - saying it would inconvenience able-bodied passengers.

Bloomberg was sounding off on a civil suit filed last week by Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara's office, which claims the city isn't close to complying with the Americans With Disabilities Act. The mayor maintained the Justice Department is off base.

"It just doesn't work in a city like ours, and I don't know that the [U.S. attorney's office] understands how people live in the city and the traffic patterns and that sort of thing," he said of street hails by wheelchair users. Champions of the handicapped immediately ripped Bloomberg's "insulting" riff.

"The mayor's completely out of touch," said Assemblyman Micah Kellner, a Manhattan Democrat who was born with cerebral palsy. "When was the last time Mayor Bloomberg used a New York City taxi or a wheelchair?"

Added Edith Prentiss of the Taxis For All Campaign: "It's a sad day for New York City when a mayor works so hard to deny people like me the right to take a taxi. It's wrong, it's indefensible, and it won't stand."

It's not the first time Bloomberg has panned accessible cabs, noting last week that hacks don't like them because they are so spacious that the drivers can't establish rapport with riders - and get smaller tips as a result.
