Michael Bloomberg Allegedly Told New Mom To Find 'Some Black' For A Nanny

Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg has long been trailed by accusations of promoting a frat house culture in the workplace, but documents in a 1998 lawsuit reported by The Washington Post contain particularly ugly remarks attributed to the Manhattan billionaire.

Around July 1993 at the financial data company he founded, Bloomberg allegedly browbeat a saleswoman in front of other employees. He’d just heard that the woman was having trouble finding a nanny, according to the lawsuit.

“It’s a fucking baby! All it does is eat and shit! It doesn’t know the difference between you and anyone else! All you need is some Black, who doesn’t even have to speak English, to rescue it from a burning building!” Bloomberg allegedly shouted. The woman, who is not named, “cried at hearing her employer say such things to her, in so public a manner,” the lawsuit stated.

21. "That suit was settled in 2000; its terms were not disclosed."
Sun Feb 16, 2020, 09:49 PM
Feb 2020
From 1996 to 1997, four women filed sexual-harassment or discrimination suits against Bloomberg the company. One of the suits included the following allegation: When Sekiko Sakai Garrison, a sales representative at the company, told Mike Bloomberg she was pregnant, he replied, “Kill it!” (Bloomberg went on, she alleged, to mutter, “Great, No. 16”—a reference, her complaint said, to the 16 women at the company who were then pregnant.)

That suit was settled in 2000; its terms were not disclosed. Other suits made similar claims. In a 1998 filing, Mary Ann Olszewski reported that “male employees from Mr. Bloomberg on down” routinely belittled women at the company—a pattern of harassment, she said, that culminated in her being raped in a Chicago hotel room by a Bloomberg executive who was also her direct superior. The case was dismissed (not, apparently, on its merits, but rather because Olszewski’s attorney had missed the deadlines to respond to a motion to end the case). Before it was, though, in a deposition relating to the suit, Bloomberg testified that he wouldn’t consider Olszewski’s rape allegation to be genuine unless there were “an unimpeachable third-party witness” to corroborate her claims. (Asked by a lawyer how such a person might happen to witness a rape, Bloomberg replied, “There are times when three people are together.”)

No shit. I learned that right here on DU today. And here I always thought racism was unconditionally bad and inexcusable, especially amongst the wealthy and powerful who have the ability to project their racism on the institutions they influence.

Worse yet, I always assumed our party was party of anti-racism. But here many of us are today, making excuses and even defending the across-the-board racism of someone because he (very recently) became "one of ours".

I never thought I'd ever say this, but perhaps our tent is becoming a little too big. Once we start excusing racism, misogyny and classism within our party, what do really stand for at that point?
