Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumSurprise text message from Sanders campaign...
My husband forwarded me a text message that he received from the Sanders campaign asking for support.
Thing is, he's never signed up for anything like that or with any political campaign. He's never signed up for anything that allows for text messages except for our cell phone bill. That's it.
He was really put off by this mostly because he doesn't care for politics and he felt is was rather intrusive.
Is this what the Sanders' campaign does now? Send out spam text messages?

If you have any friends who are avid Sanders fans then chances are one of them might have sent your information to them.
I don't know much about texts, can they be blocked?

(31,011 posts)He put a block on them already. It really aggravated him because he felt it was intrusive.

(146,286 posts)More likely it's from signing up for something online and supplying your phone number. Those lists are for sale. That's why I don't sign up for anything or make donations online through middleman websites. They're just collection points for your contact information.

(146,286 posts)I haven't.
That's probably because pretty much all of my signing up for things has been with my landline number. That is now disconnected. I haven't given out my cell number to anyone in any way involved with politics, and don't plan to.
My wife is annoyed, because she gets more than one text every day from someone pushing Bernie. She's not going to vote for Bernie. She has texted that back to those texters, which stirs them up to send even more texts.
It's an election year.

(7,820 posts)Ive received them from many of the campaigns (mostly candidates I am supporting or have supported in the past)
I have no idea how the Sanders campaign got your husbands number- but I do recall that last time they would ask supporters for contact info of friends or family who they should reach out to. Not a fan of this practice, but thats possibly what happened.

(11,605 posts)But I volunteered for him in my state in 2016, so I am not surprised by it. As I mentioned in another thread, everyone who has texted me has been perfectly polite when I tell them I am not supporting him this year in the primaries. Nothing like the stories on the news.
I think I have gotten texts from other candidates in the past whom I have never volunteered for. Every time you sign up for a candidate's list or something with a Democratic group, they usually have something where you consent to your info being shared with other candidates or groups. I get on e-mail lists constantly for candidates I never signed up for. It's annoying but it's the nature of the beast.

(31,011 posts)but he did not. He stays away from all things political...
Well, other than me.
Seriously, I would not use his phone number for this stuff because I know it would piss him off. He gets enough grief about politics with his own family which is why he wants nothing to do with it other than when he goes inside a voting booth.

(15,265 posts)To my knowledge you must text the campaign a keyword to register to recieve text messages from the campaign . I did so in 2016 at the mega-rally on Portland, Oregon.

It was suggested above that there's an app for the Sanders' campaign. We think it was a friend or family member that offered his phone number.

I didn't support him in 2016.
I don't support him now.
I don't like him.
I don't trust him.
If he's nominated I'll vote for him but he would lose in a coast to coast landslide that would make 1972 look like 1960.
No thank you.
RESIST!
