Conservative upstate Republicans in South Carolina will press GOP voters to vote in the primary for Democratic hopeful Bernie Sanders in an effort to support the candidate they think has the weakest general election prospects opposite President Trump.

(2,657 posts)He lost the GOP Presidential to appointed (but not elected) President Gerald Ford in 1976, but then won the nomination and the Presidency in 1980. However, you have to keep in mind that the economy was in a bad recession at the time, and gasoline prices were quite high.
