Sanders says at town hall he won't release more medical records - some reactions

Last edited Wed Feb 19, 2020, 01:06 AM - Edit history (1)

Mediaite article on what Sanders said tonight:

https://www.mediaite.com/election-2020/bernie-sanders-asked-whether-hell-release-more-medical-records-says-i-dont-think-we-will/

Jonathan Alters calls this Trumpish:

Joe Lockhart says this is disqualifying:

Lawfare editor Susan Hennessey says this is completely unacceptable and indefensible:

Sanders of course is breaking his promise to release those medical records before the first votes are cast.

He's also looking exhausted, IMO.

_____

Editing to add that George Conway tweeted one of the responses the Mediaite article quotes. He asked about life expectancy for someone Sanders' age who's had a heart attack.

The answer he got from a doctor responding there was that median survival time is 3.1 years (this includes heart attack patients given stents, as Sanders was), with a 24% mortality rate in the first year.

See this OP for the medical journal cited and the tweets:

The effects of polio were chronic; aside from the damage to his legs he was not unhealthy at the time he was elected for the first time. But his health started to decline after about 1940.

In 1944 he was found to have high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease causing angina pectoris, and congestive heart failure. During the 1944 re-election campaign, McIntire denied several times that Roosevelt's health was poor; on October 12, for example, he announced that "The President's health is perfectly OK. There are absolutely no organic difficulties at all." Roosevelt realized that his declining health could eventually make it impossible for him to continue as president, and in 1945 he told a confidant that he might resign from the presidency following the end of the war. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_D._Roosevelt He died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1945.

Would he have been re-elected in 1944 if his doctor hadn't misrepresented his condition?

Bernie Supporter: MISINFORMATION!!1

Gimme a break. He made, and casually broke, a promise. In plain language, he lied. The only logical conclusion is that he reconsidered because he calculates that releasing the records would harm his campaign. Therefore, what is in those records that he doesn't want us to see?

Furthermore, once someone lies to me, I'm not inclined to trust them again.

He is not thinking what is best for our country and for democracy. He is thinking of himself. He is being selfish. This, imo, shows a lack of character.

A man almost 80 who recently had a heart attack is refusing to release his medical records. Letters from a doctor means nothing as they are only allowed to discuss what the patient gives them permission to reveal.

I have been a Democrat my entire adult life and if Bernie is the nominee I will vote for him but I will have to force myself to do so. I’m not alone. That tells you this: millions will stay home and Trump wins.

So his refusal to release them guarantees that it isn't reassuring., that he's hiding how serious his health problems are.

This should be disqualifying for any candidate.

Whatever the actual motivation behind his bizarre "I will/I won't release my medical records" nonsense, it looks like nothing so much as an attempt to cover up a campaign-killing health issue.

It's not about ageism or ableism, as Sanders' supporters have aggressively Sandsplained to me on social media; it's about reasonable disclosure and the suspicion that Sanders is knowingly creating by hiding his records.

He requires us to ask "what else is he hiding?" and he's being disingenuous if he pretends anything to the contrary.

Stop with age criticism, people drop dead from heart attacks at early ages as well, Luke Perry died of a stroke at age 52. That's beside the point though. I'd take Sanders over Trump any day even if he dropped dead a week after being sworn in.

Vermont senator Bernie Sanders: 79 years, 1 month, 26 days.

Former New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg: 78 years, 8 months, 20 days.

Older people who have had heart attacks are likely to have a fatal one, and within only a few years:

The analysis contained almost 23,000 patients from the CRUSADE registry who were treated at 344 U.S. hospitals from 2004 to 2006. Patients were a median of 77 years old at baseline, 52.5 percent were male and 13.3 percent were nonwhite.

In the overall cohort, the median survival was 4.8 years, including 8.2 years for those aged 65 to 74 and 3.1 years for people over 75.

people freaking out over this is nuts. it's not about his medical records, that's just the excuse (read motivated reasoning) these folks have to attack Sanders.

could care so little about medical records it's not even funny. plus what about HIPAA? why should our presidential candidates be afforded less protections and their own privacy? what is his medical record really going to tell you? Why do these people care so much about such about a trivial issue?

each and everyone of us could croak tomorrow, that's the nature of the game. medical records aren't crystal balls.

oh but he lied. ok he did. own it. keep finding Jesus Christ in a candidate. let me know when you find them. I better see every stinking one of this people in here ATTACK their candidate once they lie. Because it will happen. Dare I speak against the prophet? Yes, if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor.

as you noted also, Sanders will have a VP, so even if the man dies in office, we are still no longer under a Trump presidency. but hey let's not game this out too much.....
