Related: About this forumMedian survival time for men Sanders' age who got a stent after a heart attack is 3.1 years
with a 24% mortality rate in the first year.
This is from a heart journal article linked to by a doctor who'd responded to a tweet from George Conway asking about this, after Sanders said during tonight's town hall that he won't be releasing his medical records, despite his earlier promise to do so.
Article:

The reference to percutaneous coronary intervention there is to stents.

(571 posts)A person who wants to be President, who just had a heart attack, who PROMISED to provide his full medical records before the first votes were cast.... should be held to account if he doesn't provide his records.

(571 posts)The Presidency is the highest-stress job in the world. The health and well-being of the President is of paramount concern to the populace.
It is why Trump's obvious drug addiction and early-onset dementia is such a big deal.
For the record... Joe Biden and Mike Bloomberg need to release their full medical records too. These three 78-year-old men - who would be the first Presidents to turn 80 while on the job - need to give us full transparency concerning their health.
I'd say the same about Liz Warren (at 70 years old) too... but she released her full medical records back in December (not just a letter from a doctor).

(32,640 posts)that he did with his promises on releasing his full medical records?
That question implicates the substance of all his policies, doesn't it?
And it's not just his promise about releasing his full medical records to consider:

(11,970 posts)As I posted elsewhere...
I'm not taking a stand here over whether he should or should not release them, but I repeatedly see posts here saying that he "promised" to do so, or similar. When did simply saying that you will do something turn into a promise? Sometimes people simply say what they intend to do, and they mean it at the time, and they change their mind. Or the words they chose off the cuff were not the most accurate description of their intent. My point is simply: Not every statement each of us makes qualifies as a promise. These characterizations strike me as dishonest, and I think are from those whose agenda is simply to cast Sanders in a bad light.

But I recall the before and after pictures of presidents. Without exception, the job seems to age them more rapidly.
It is not an ideal job for an older man with a heart condition. So much stress.
Therefore, the American people deserve to know the health of the persons they're considering for this job.
Ditto especially for Joe Biden and Mike Bloomberg. They shouldn't get a free pass here either. All candidates should release their medicals.
If we survive Trump, someday maybe, they'll pass legislation making candidates take mental health exams so we don't have someone with serious mental health problems in the Oval office like we do today.

(48,886 posts)the procedure worked.
And since you don't mention a heart attack, I'm assuming he didn't have one.
Just checked and saw that he had one stent for a blocked coronary artery in 2000.

So...no heart attack, and he's been in good health for 20 years since getting that stent.
I'd say Sanders' health is obviously of more concern. Especially since he backtracked on his promise to release his records.

(48,886 posts)Bloomberg had suffered a heart attack. He hadn't.
The Sanders campaign clearly knows how bad Bernie's refusal to release those records after promising to release them looks for him, so they're trying to distract by lying about Bloomberg's health.

Furthermore, when a candidate promises something and immediately goes back on that, it causes me concern.
Bernie has a major medical episode. He was willing to release his records when he thought he was healthy, but not after an event that suggests otherwise.

You cant expect anything out of a bad heart
And why anyone would take that stress
On with a bad heart is crazy.
P.s.
A bad heart doesnt come alone.
There will be ischemic changes and narrowing
Arteries, also possibly kidney failure due
To arteriosclerosis and stroke risk.
Just part of the aging process.

(22,911 posts)It is hard to find the difference between mean, median, and mode estimates discussed in relation to life expectancy, but I found this:
"the mean, median and mode can be very different. For these survival distributions it is perhaps remarkable how far the mode is from the mean: for girls born now, even assuming there are no more increases in survival, their most likely age to die is 90, seven years more than the mean on 83. For little baby boys the mode is 86, again seven years more than the mean of 79. And even the median is 3 years more than the mean. Thats why I now believe that life expectancy is misleading."
https://medianism.org/2017/06/12/median-vs-mean-life-expectancy/
Median makes no distinction between sub group variances. Half of everyone falls on one side, half of everyone falls on the other. So smokers get lumped in with non smokers, and desperately poor people are lumped in with people who can afford a healthy lifestyle and the best preventive health care money can buy, people who are suffering from multiple serious ailments get lumped in with those who are only contending with one or none, people who monitor their health regularly are lumped in with those who ignore all warning signs, and so on.
All of our elderly candidates running for President are positioned to do far better than a median data point would otherwise indicate.

(1,283 posts)and just had her second stent put it last September. Her first stent was put in 21 years ago.
She never had a heart attack though and is in great shape both psychically and mentally.
She walks 15 minute miles and works out at Planet Fitness with a trainer twice a week.
She has no damage at all to her heart (and I know this because I was their for her procedure and spoke with her cardiologist immediately after.)
Bernie, OTOH, does have damage to his heart. The stent(s) are put in to bypass the blockage in his artery(ies) that caused his heart attack. But the damage to his heart from his attack cannot be undone. Its permanent.
