https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2020/02/18/bernie-sanders-wont-release-full-medical-records/4801735002/Sanders, 78, suffered a heart attack in October during a campaign event. He had a blockage in one artery and two stents were inserted, his campaign said at the time.
Speaking during CNN's town hall in Las Vegas, Sanders was asked to clarify whether his presidential campaign would be releasing full medical records, which he previously stated he would do. Sanders will take part in the Democractic candidate debate Wedneday night.
At the time, he said, "The people do have a right to know about the health of a senator, somebody who's running for president of the United States -- full disclosure."

If Hillary Clinton had a heart attack 4 years ago and said this, CNN would have run non stop panels featuring Sanjay Gupta, Dr. Oz and a magic wall that only showed various searches of WebMD.

He was saying this about other candidates just last year...
Who says that Bernie never changes his position or evolves?
What turned out to be in those full medical records that he thinks will harm his campaign?

(22,911 posts)But in the big picture I can't muster up any outrage over this. I would have preferred younger candidates, all things being equal, but our top three polling candidates in the race so far are mid to late 70's males. Most men in their mid to late 70's are not in perfect health. And in that age group a previously unknown heart issue could emerge for any of them at any time. All of these men, IMO, can be called "at risk". Fortunately in many cases, with today's medical advances, treatments can be effective at greatly prolonging life. Bill Clinton had serious heart issues, after he left office, that emerged while he was campaigning for John Kerry:
"He was transferred to Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, where he underwent a successful on-pump quadruple coronary artery bypass surgery on September 6, 2004. The medical team stated, had he not had surgery, he would have likely suffered a massive heart attack within a few months".
That's 16 years and counting now. I will note with no great pleasure that Dick Cheney is also still with us today. No candidate wants to shed light on potential health liabilities, the current occupant of the White House included. But neither Sanders, Bloomberg or Biden are infirm and there is good reason to think all of them are capable of doing the job, as were FDR and JFK in prior decades

(22,911 posts)It's kind of like Bill Clinton getting caught lying about sex for me. Not good, but not involving his policies or his political alliances. As to the part about Sanders being "held up as a paragon of honesty, transparency and constancy?" I've long since stopped believing that a good person in politics can and will be a Saint regarding matters political. I think Sanders overall is far better than most in that regard, but nowhere near perfect. Which, in the real world, translates as "good enough" to me.

(7,068 posts)I mean, it's all well and good to disagree, but ultimately I can't see many Sanders supporters changing their minds, even though, IMO, this is a big deal.
It's not that I think Sanders is going to keel over. It's that I don't like the lack of transparency. It suggests there is something to hide, or that he thinks that the health the President isn't something we need be concerned about. But it is to me, especially since I don't know who he will select as a running mate (and I am concerned about that pick).

Philip Ades, director of cardiac rehabilitation at the University of Vermont Medical Center, wrote that Sanders is more than fit enough to pursue vigorous activities and an occupation that requires stamina and an ability to handle a great deal of stress.
Martin LeWinter, Sanders personal cardiologist and an attending cardiologist at UVM, wrote that the senator has made an uneventful recovery from his heart attack and concluded: I am confident he has the mental and physical stamina to fully undertake the rigors of the Presidency.
Monahans letter also revealed the results of Sanders most recent physical examination, on Dec. 19, which showed the senator as having a blood pressure level of 102/56 and a pulse rate of 62 beats per minute. His height measured 6 feet, and he weighed in at 174 pounds.
