Seems to be too confusing and people may not even know someone dropped out and waste their vote

Or ballot laws. In some states, once you're on, you stay on. Of course, John Ashcroft famously lost to a dead guy because MO didn't take his opponent off the ballot.

and with early voting and vote by mail becoming more common, that can be two months or more before the actual election date. In my state, the deadline for the ballot was late December, so Harris (who dropped out before then) isn't on it, but Booker and Castro (who dropped out after the ballot layout was finalized) still are.

BTW, I don't think a vote is wasted even if the candidate has already dropped out or will shortly. But then I have a stellar record of my primary choice not making it to the nomination.
