Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumThe age question.
I am 67. And I think its legitimate to ask that a potential President have the energy to live up to this demanding job.
I understand that people are different. One person might be a lot stronger than another of the same age.
However, I think the ideal candidate would be between the ages of 50 and 70. Not too young and inexperienced and not too old to run the gamut.
Of our current candidates, this would include, in ascending order, Amy, Tom Steyer, and Elizabeth. I dont know much about Tom, but the other two are brilliant!
That said, I will vote for anyone to beat Trump and the GOP.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden

(36 posts)Anyone who can run a campaign for a solid year, traveling from city to city and give speeches day after day after day. Has my vote. I get tired on a four-day road trip if I had to do it for a solid year.......Hmm, to be the president, maybe I would/will someday. But imagine the physical and mental stress someone like Sanders or Warren are under. I'm only 51, that gives me 10 years to train.
Vote blue no matter who, the supreme court matters. Ruth Bader Ginsberg deserves to retire if she wants to next spring.

(29,199 posts)I stated my position that I wanted 4 people to NOT run...
Berni,
Joe,
Hillary,
Elizabeth
(and now I would add Mike).
I know people don't all age the same... but having reached my middle 60s now... I know I've lost a step or two mentally. What I've gained in experience and wisdom doesn't make up for the loss of both physical and mental reflexes.
I really wanted this primary season to be a new class of politicians... but so far, only Amy and Pete seem to be surviving in the polls. Bernie's basically has his supporters from last go round, and Hillary's supporters have split to all of the moderate running (Pete, Amy, Joe, maybe even some to Elizabeth).
This isn't good for our chances this fall.
I really will keep my finger and toes crossed that we win.

(25,853 posts)I'm fine with Elizabeth as she's actually a year younger than I am.
The other aspect of the age thing that never seems to be mentioned is this: Isn't it about time the Boomer generation got the hell out of the way? We need younger people and newer ideas running this country. We need people who will themselves be around forty or even fifty years from now.
Every time someone enthuses about the possibility of a greatly extended life span, I shudder, and for the very reason that we don't want to have a generation in power for hundreds of years.
As for the argument that someone who can run a Presidential campaign is necessarily fit for office, sorry. Donald Trump, perhaps the laziest man on the planet ran a Presidential campaign. Successfully, I have to add as he got the necessary electoral college votes.

(31,515 posts)However, for this election, it is much more important for me to defeat Trump and remove him from office than to argue about the age of the candidates. I would highly recommend that if one of the septuagenarians wins the nomination, they pick a younger, energetic running mate who can step into the Presidency in case they are unable to complete their term in office.

(22,875 posts)and Biden is the youngest of those three..
The youngest Baby Boomers are 56 I think.. or 55.. so you would want someone in their mid 50's to get out of the way?? seems a little harsh..

(25,853 posts)Sanders, Bloomberg, and Biden are Silent Generation and I don't want someone that old as our next President.
If we had some younger Boomers running that would be fabulous. Sadly, we don't.

(25,853 posts)1943 to 1960. I recommend reading the book Generations by William Strauss and Neil Howe. In it they make a very strong case for the years I've given. What they look at is common life events. I really wish more people would read that book.
It's subtitled "The History of America's Future 1584 to 2069."
