(10,721 posts)As the 538 piece I posted makes clear, self-identified moderates, independents and undecideds are all over the map ideologically-speaking. There isn't this mass of middle-of-the-roaders with a similar, well-defined moderate ideology who will vote for whichever candidate is closest to the center. That's a myth, but people are very invested in that myth.
And what many call "far left" positions have overwhelming support in spite of billions' worth of propaganda.

Have you led marches which impacted legislation at the state level? The advocates who endorsed Bernie have done exactly that.

they also support his vote against the brady bill?

(1,898 posts)Does your opposition to Sanders carry even the tiniest impact when compared to these massive endorsements? Does your voice represent a movement of thousands which impacted legislation at the state level? Riddle me that.

but its mine, and I doubt I'm alone.
All I do know is that any gun activist who supports a guy that voted against the Brady Bill has some serious conflict to work out within themselves.

(1,898 posts)The Brady Bill was important legislation for which President Clinton deserves enormous credit but I ask you, if it had a truly lasting impact, why is it not the law of the land today?
The more meaningful statistic covers a politician's entire career rather than a handful of votes. The legislative process is known as sausage making for a reason.
During his 2018 campaign for reelection to the United State Senate, the NRA awarded Sanders a rating of F, which speaks volumes.

(18,252 posts)Didn't BS ACTUALLY VOTE WITH REPUBLICANS FOR THE PLCAA, giving the gun industry blanket immunity from civil lawsuits?
Career politicians are always "calling for" better policies at election time. It's more important to look at what they have and haven't actually done, especially if they've been part of the Washington establishment for more than a quarter of the century.

(1,898 posts)Remember that, while I oppose hunting, Sanders represents a state in which hunting not only is part of the culture but a YUGE part of the economy (I lived there for 3 years and remember it well). As a senator, his top job is to represent his constituents, who rely on hunting directly or indirectly. Further, until the Second Amendment itself is amended (a move which I zealously support), gun ownership is legal.
Legislating legal exposure for gun manufacturers who sell a legal product would be akin to ordering lawsuits of Ford or General Motors for incidents of road rage.
The bottom line is that Sanders just lined up A LARGE NUMBER of endorsements from young advocates for gun control mere months after the NRA issued its most recent F rating of the Senator because they all know that he supports an assault weapons ban and won't rest until it's the law of the land.

(3 posts)Vermonter's gun habits are solely because of the rural state per capita has nearly as many guns as Texas and no (very little) crime -- Bernie has THE BEST chance of entertaining a discussion that is past time, on mental health NRA and their insane promotion of guns.
I believe Sanders has the best opportunity to get something going here.

BTW, how can Vermont reflect Sanders' education - he was educated in the NYC (like in the BIGGEST city) public school system and at the University of Chicago (like in the THIRD biggest city).

the argument is that Bernie will support gun control only if it is convenient for his election hopes.
