not quite correct. Unfortunately, some of your perception is Bernie’s fault.

IMO, Bernie’s “socialism” isn’t really socialism. He’s just advocating for policies that most Americans favor. He’s talked about increasing taxes on the super rich and for fiscal responsibility, which was ignored by failed socialist states. Bernie’s mistake is to disavow socialism as a total way of governing, because he does not advocate for socialism as a total way of governing.

Socialistic intentions are stated, BTW, right in the Preamble, where it’s stated that we “promote the general welfare.” In the US, some of our life is governed by socialistic policies.

he's added the word "democratic" in front of it to soften the negativity of it as he became interested in using the Democratic Party to run for president. But video and ample other evidence is out there of him touting socialism. He should've said years ago he was a "social democrat" in the Nordic model if that is really what he meant but he's stuck with the baggage-laden, self-appellation of "democratic socialist" when the social democracies of Europe are actually capitalist countries, not democratic socialist countries.

Labeling himself a democratic socialist was a mistake not just because there actually is a Democratic Socialist Party in the US which actively advocates actual socialism, historically there's never been a sustained, successful deployment of pure socialism in any country, and the repugs will run ads 24/7 showing videos of him actually saying "I am a socialist".

And as I've said, the social democracies of Europe are actually highly regulated and highly taxed capitalist countries with strong, robust safety nets provided for by the high taxes—single payer healthcare, free college, etc.

An adjustment can be raising the income limit on funding social security or for that matter an adjustment can actually mean increasing benefits by tying it to inflation most affecting senior citizens.

Seems reasonable from that point of view.

Most folks are ok with a gradual phase-in , raising the retirement age.
Not so with decreasing benefits.
Having the wealthy contribute at a lower ceiling also has broad support.

Did starting in 1983, raising max retirement age from
gradually from 65 to 67.

Meanwhile ... tho I don’t care for it... this from Motley Fool addresses benefit cuts stated by Bloomberg:
