What if Mike Bloomberg had decided in 2019 to challenge Trump as the GOP nominee?

Last edited Wed Feb 19, 2020, 09:13 PM - Edit history (1)

He was a Democrat prior to 2001,

What if he had decided early last year to run in every GOP primary, using his huge fortune, and run as the illusive, nearly extinct, GOP moderate. More of a Gerald Ford Republican.

What would have been the outcome? Unlike Weld, and Walsh, Bloomberg can easily self fund, and as we have seen , Bloomberg can fight Trump at the insult game as well.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

But I thought some state parties passed new rules to make primarying trump not possible? Even so, he would get crushed. Sitting President still wildly popular with the goons. He’d beat Weld though.

And it’s still mostly winner take all last I checked. Maybe he picks up a state. Even here in the Northeast Moderate Republican area, there is no such thing. They’re all fucking maniacs. The old New England Republicans are now Democrats or unaffiliated.

Feb 2020

He's been an Independent since 2007 and a Democrat since 2018.

That pretty much undermines your entire argument. He also only became a Republican for tactical purposes - the Dem primary was loaded. Since NYC is clearly pretty liberal, they didn't think he was some staunch conservative simply because of the R. Probably because he wasn't.

I don't want him to be the nominee, but the insistently false assertions people are making about him, particularly those that are easily debunked in about 30 seconds, are getting a little tiresome.

The party of Trump hates Bloomie, especially what they consider his nanny statism and his gun-grabbing. He'd have done about as badly as William Weld.

However, Bloomie doesn't do anything without data (I'm told) and he figured that he could wedge his way into our primary, if only Joe Biden would implode. His strategists concluded that was not only possible, but likely, so he jumped in. So far, events have played out the way that Bloomie and his advisors have planned.
