Meghan McCain confronts AOC over 'deeply misogynistic' Bernie Sanders supporters

On Wednesday, Meghan McCain confronted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez over "deeply misogynistic" and "violent" supporters of Bernie Sanders on "The View."

"The one thing that connects women on the left and women on the right, at least a lot of guest co-hosts, guests that come on, is the abuse that we have all been subjected to by the Bernie bros. It is by far the most violent, most misogynistic, the most sexist, the most harmful," McCain told AOC, adding that "it’s disgusting and vitriolic."

"How do you feel that he’s attached to this deeply misogynistic and I would go so far as to say violent sector of people?" she asked.

Ocasio-Cortez responded that internet culture can be very toxic and the activity online is "difficult to control."

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez responds to criticism that Sanders' policies are too radical

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined "The View" on Wednesday, promoting Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders as a fighter for the working class, for "people like us."

Ocasio-Cortez, who served as a volunteer for Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign, announced her endorsement of the senator's 2020 presidential campaign last fall. She first appeared alongside Sanders at his first rally following his heart attack in October, -- when the pair attracted an estimated 26,000 people to a rally in Queens, New York -- the largest event held by any member of the Democratic field this cycle.

Despite criticism, Ocasio-Cortez said Sanders' campaign intrigued her even before she ran for office herself, especially as progressive became more "en vogue."

When asked by the hosts on why she chose to endorse Sanders, the freshman lawmaker didn't hesitate.

...the Bernie Bro types there don't even really venture into the Trump threads much. All their time is spent trashing Democrats. You would almost never see them in the impeachment threads, but they should would make their appearance in the Democratic nomination threads, usually trashing whatever particular Democratic candidate had momentum at that time and seemed like they might be a threat to Sanders. I mean, hell, they spent more time defending Gabbard than they did attacking Trump.

If Sanders were to win, I fully expect them to spend more time trashing Democrats for not being full-throated supporters of Sanders than they will going after Trump.

Stop attacking Democrats as the enemy for starters and maybe his supporters won't treat other Democrats as the enemy.

Tell his campaign staff to stop lying about other Democratic candidates.

Stop hiring divisive Jill Stein-supporting types to his campaign.

Stop hiring bigoted and hateful people to the campaign (e.g., Orfalea) and stop boosting endorsements from bigoted and hateful people (e.g., Rogan).

When you are confronted with the problem of your toxic supporters, don't pivot into a """both sides""" argument or, even worse, blame RUSSIANS for the problem (especially given the fact that several people in your campaign openly dispute Russian interference in 2016 and, in fact, the Russians were found to be BOOSTING your campaign -- not hurting it!). Take responsibility!

You can go on and on. It's really not that difficult. None of the other candidates' supporters act in such a consistently asshole'ish way. If he needs help on how to address his supporters' poor behavior, ask the other candidates for pointers.

anonymous asholes on the internet behave. And you are dead wrong. Other candidates do have supporters that act like assholes, they just amplify the Bernie supporters. Because there is not a damn thing people who don't like Bernie won't harp about.

Let's cut the crap here. If he wanted to stop their behavior, he could. If he wanted to separate himself from that behavior, he could. But he doesn't want to. His campaign's hiring practices in particular have proven that he welcomes their toxicity.

Either way, he has a problem that the other campaigns do not -- period. The toxicity of his supporters is a feature at this point, not a bug.

He could have nipped a lot of this in the bud by keeping to his commitment to remain in the party instead of leaving it immediately once it no longer benefited him and then take cheap shots at it for years before temporarily joining it again to use its resources to his personal political advantage.

I look forward to the conspiracy theories that you all will inevitably create when your candidate can only garner ~30% of the vote and then wonders why the rest of the party he and his supporters constantly shit on hates him and won't push him over the edge as our nominee.

Turning off would-be allies is exactly why Sanders has accomplished nothing legislatively despite three decades in Congress.

It's a complete fantasy that Bernie supporters are more misogynistic or rude than other people on the internet. I'm not surprised that Meghan McCain, a Republican, would be pushing that lie.

But there's something especially ironic when a millionaire right-wing heiress is complaining about mean things people say on twitter. She wants the mean tweets to stop (well, some of them, I doubt she cares about mean tweets directed at other people like Bernie), but she opposes policies that would actually provide people with healthcare. That's how right-wing millionaires see the world.
