Rep. Josh Gottheimer joins fellow NJ Democrats and backs Mike Bloomberg's presidential bid
Bergen Record
Rep. Josh Gottheimer is jumping on the Bloomberg bandwagon.
Gottheimer, a Democrat representing the 5th Congressional District, on Thursday endorsed former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg for the Democratic nomination for president. Bloomberg, 77, is an "experienced, proven leader who has big ideas," Gottheimer said in a statement.
"As he demonstrated as an entrepreneur and mayor, Mike is a proven problem solver," Gottheimer said. "He isnt afraid to speak his mind, and knows that youll never make lasting progress with scorched earth tweets, nasty personal attacks, or an all-or-nothing extremist approach to governing. Its about building bridges, uniting people, and finding common ground."
Gottheimers support for Bloomberg is not a surprise. The two-term congressman has branded himself as a problem-solving, moderate Democrat at a time the rising stars of his party are leftist firebrands, while Bloomberg entered the presidential race with an appeal to moderates wary of the more liberal policies of White House hopefuls like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
